Aaron Wan-Bissaka has made right-back his own since his move from Crystal Palace last summer.

Diogo Dalot once termed as “the next Gary Neville”, could endure a disappointing exit from Old Trafford, failing to live up to the early promise that landed him at Manchester United in the summer of 2018.

Signed from Porto in a £19m deal, then Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho hoped his compatriot to be a long-term presence in the right-back spot, replacing club captain Antonio Valencia. Unfortunately, persistent injury issues have meant that Dalot has just 34 club appearances in his two seasons in England.

Ole Gunnar Solkjaer, though, has had different ideas for his full-back positions, which was evident with the signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka last summer. After a solid debut season for the Reds, the decision of reinforcing that area seems justified.

Constant injury issues and unknown background factors have led to a sensational demotion in the fullback hierarchy for Diogo Dalot, who finds himself behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, and Ethan Laird for a spot in the starting eleven.

With Man United in need of extra funds to pare the losses incurred due to the pandemic, selling out of favour superstars is a priority this summer. Plus, the vacant spots would be filled by someone deemed useful by Solskjaer and his management contingent.

More from Manchester United

Dalot, in spite of an underwhelming spell at United, is a significant asset due to his age and potential. Man United bosses are tempted to let go of the Portugal youth international should a suitable proposal arrives at the table.

"Diogo Dalot is one of the players who could leave Manchester United this summer. The 21-year-old was never an option for the manager, who’s been using Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the first choice, and now has Timothy Fosu-Mensah as his preferred backup. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to make some room in his squad. Most recently, Everton have made initial inquiries for Dalot, admired by manager Carlo Ancelotti for his versatility and substantial room for improvement. Barcelona, too, have shown their interest in the former Porto defender.

In addition, Paris Saint-Germain have reignited their interest in the 21-year-old, having made an inquiry pre-COVID lockdown. Manchester United would be hoping to recoup a major share of 22 million euros they’ve invested in Dalot two seasons ago.
