Red Devils have been dominant when Nemanja Matic has anchored their midfield.

On the back of an 18 game unbeaten run, Manchester United, suddenly, have a top-four finish in the own hands – a feat which, a few months ago, looked almost improbable. But, the arrival of Bruno Fernandes has elevated standards at Old Trafford by such a quantum that on current form, they rub shoulders with the league’s best.

There has been an immense shift in output from the attacking department, comprising of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, and Mason Greenwood. But, the main credit is due to the midfield shape which ensures optimum supply channels while maintaining compact shape.

Much of United’s recent emergence is dependent on how Nemanja Matic, once deemed extremely close to a move away from Old Trafford in January, defied the odds and reclaimed his midfield anchor’s role in Solskjaer’s starting XI.

Due to the Serbian’s calm influence in a number 6 role, the defence and attacking midfielders have found a solid bridge to construct their attacking games. In Matic’s absence for 60 minutes against Crystal Palace, Man United found it difficult to sustain their passing rhythm and fluidity.

Solskjaer and his coaching staff are aware of the importance of the role which Matic plays as a number 6. Despite that, the club insiders are reluctant to invest heavily in a defensive midfield area given other areas where the needs are more telling.

To counter financial constraints existenting in the current economic climate, Solskjaer could make a shrewd move by offering former Burnley midfielder a contract to sign for Man United on a Bosman transfer.

After seeing out his contract at Turf Moor, the Republic of Ireland international has attracted interest from multiple clubs across Europe. Not blessed with the technical qualities of someone like Paul Pogba, Hendrick, with his tenacity and engine, could provide protection and purpose to attacking heavy, midfield lineup.

More from Manchester United

In addition to his midfield role, Jeff Hendrick is a versatile midfielder who could even occupy a wider position on the right flank – both as an attacker and a full-back, making the 28-year-old a utility squad player for Solskjaer, potentially.
