The players that made the difference for Jurgen Klopp.

When Coutinho departed Liverpool for greener pastures, aka Barcelona, in the winter transfer window of 2018 it hurt the Reds, or so everyone thought. Coutinho’s sale which generated £105m (could rise to £145m), the Merseyside team quickly invested in purchasing Virgil van Dijk for £75m. The most expensive transfer fee for a centre-back at the time, who would eventually go on to be ranked as the best defender in the world.

At the start of the 2017/2018 season, Klopp opted to purchase Mohamed Salah from Roma for £36.9m. The ex-Chelsea flop, impressed for the Italian side, and what an unintentional, plus genius buy from the German manager. The Egyptian International went on to play 36 matches for Liverpool scoring an astonishing 32 goals and providing 10 assists in a single season.

Klopp also made some fantastic bargain buys with likes of Andrew Robertson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain arriving at Anfield from Hull City and Arsenal, respectively. Liverpool again finished 4th in the Premier League and also losing 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

The opposing teams in the Premier League knew that Liverpool was not a team to be trifled with especially going into the new season.
