Premier League: Liverpool’s 2019-20 Players of The Year
Liverpool boasts the best defense in the Premier League. They have a world-class goalie who is protected by an equally strong backline.
The Reds have conceded the least number of goals in the Premier League with 21. They also have the lowest expected goals against (xGA) in open play. Most importantly, they also have the second-lowest opponents xG per shots on target.
Several defensive players could make a sound argument to be Liverpool’s defensive player of the year. Alexander-Arnold has the offensive statistics mentioned earlier, but he’s also a solid defensive player. He leads the club in interceptions. Trent is also second in the club in clearances, blocked shots, and blocked passes.

Midfielder Jordan Henderson has displayed a tremendous work rate. He led the Reds in tackles, tackles won, and the percentage of dribblers tackled. The 29-year-old team captain was also second in pressures, successful pressures, and the rate of successful pressures.
Ballon D’or runner-up Virgil van Dijk has remained a formidable defensive weapon. He led all defenders in goals with four and was second-best in goal conversion rate. The Dutch national also led in clearances and successful pressures, although opposing offenses tried to avoid him.
Though it was an incredibly difficult choice, I am picking goalkeeper Alisson as the club’s defensive player of the year.
The 26-year-old Brazilian started 20 matches for the Reds this season due to injury and suspension. He led the Premier League in save percentage, clean sheet percentage (80%), lowest goals conceded (21), wins (18), and fewest goals against per 90 minutes (0.57).
Another reason I chose Alisson the honor is because of the stark difference between his play between the posts and his substitute.
Adrián played in 11 Premier League matches for the Reds this season. He won all nine games he started. However, his save percentage of 64% was the fourth lowest of all goaltenders who played more than ten matches. The Spaniard was also 15th out of 24 goalies in clean sheet percentage at 22%.
Alisson has demonstrated that he is the best goalkeeper in the league and arguably the best in the world. He is a consistent difference-maker for the best club team in the world.
