Which Premier League club is landing Jadon Sancho this summer?
He is only 19. By the way.
While in Germany, Jadon has played primarily as a right-winger, but can also play on the left and in attacking midfield. He debuted on Dortmund’s senior squad at 17 and made seven starts, scoring one goal and getting four assists. Last season was his break-out season for Der BVB, he played in 43 matches (starting in 31) in all competitions. The 18-year-old phenom notched 13 goals and 16 assists for the club in both domestic, and Champions League competition.
While all eyes in the US were on Christian Pulisic, it was Sancho that worked his way up and took the American’s spot in the line-up.
In a transfer, loan back, and return deal, the then 20-year-old Pulisic was sent to Chelsea. This move handed the right-wing position completely over to Sancho for this season.
Jadon has been a dominant force for Dortmund this season. In 29 matches, he has notched 15 goals and 16 assists across all competitions. He is currently third in goals and first in assists in the Bundesliga. His expected goals (xG) and assists (xA) is 5.8 and 6.5 respectively, which suggests that he does an excellent job converting goal opportunities either as the shooter or the set-up man.
His non-penalty expected goals plus expected assists per 90 minutes (npxG+xA), per FBref.com, is 0.72 which is tops on his club (minimum of 1,000 minutes played). To compare, Pulisic’s npxG+xA last season was 0.59 for Dortmund.
Oh, did I mention that he is only 19?
Despite press reports that suggested that Jadon has had “attitude” issues, resulting in disciplinary action, he has continued to excel. These reported issues could easily be chalked up to – being only 19. It is clearly expected that with maturity he is only going to get better, but the clashes between him and his manager, Lucien Favre, might be fueling his desire to leave.
According to Transfermarkt, Sancho’s market value is $132 million.
So what next?
There are a number of Premier League teams that have been linked with a transfer deal for the English playmaker. Rumors of his transfer to a top-flight club started last summer and have only increased alongside his goal and assist tally.
Since it’s likely that the transfer fee being asked for by Dortmund is in the triple digits in millions of dollars, there are few clubs in England that can actually afford to get Sancho this summer. As far as the English Premier League is concerned, four teams have been clearly connected to the young English star.
