Klopp always had the Gomez plan in mind and knew before the terrible end to the 2017-2018 season (losing the final) what he was going to do with the ex-Charlton Athletic player.

Once van Dijk was included as the main man at the back, Klopp soon planned on moving Joe back to his natural position in central defence. The move made all the sense in the world.

He was partnering up with the best in the game, as well as moving into a place of comfort.

After the switch, another marvellous door opened for Trent Alexander-Arnold to walked through. After this… The corner was taken quickly and the rest is history. A history that is still been made today.

During this time, the Liverpool boss switched between the two Englishmen on the right-hand side of the defence. Trent had far more joy than Joe did and it was clear where his calling was.

The moment Joe moved back into partner with Virgil, Liverpool’s defensive system looked a more solid and convincing unit. They ate up almost every attack thrown at them.
