Gedson Fernandes. A name synonymously mentioned with West Ham for a couple of weeks running and just like that, Tottenham has snatched the Benfica player from signing with them.

The January transfer window has brought about more excitement than the summer one. This because of the number of managerial changes in the Premier League and across Europe. Even top clubs have changed hands plenty of times already.

Put this together with Chelsea’s lift on their transfer ban and we in for a busy winter window. David Moyes’ West Ham we have to admit, have been pulling off some noteworthy signings under predecessor, Manuel Pellegrini.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

It was no different heading into this transfer period when all reports suggested the Hammers were about to sign one of Portugal’s most promising 21-year-olds, Gedson Fernandes. According to outlets across Europe, it was all but confirmed that the youngster would end up at the Olympic Stadium.

Turn and look away for a split second and we hear the midfielder is on his way to another club in the London region. It has been confirmed that Fernandes is just a medical away from joining forces with Jose at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, as per Fabrizio Romano, the East Londoners were never in for the Portuguese, even though every talk was surrounding them and the player.

The deal in place is said to be an 18th month-long loan spell with an option to make permanent. Will he make an impact?

Tottenham’s need for Gedson Fernandes

Tottenham’s last runout proved just how much they are in need of new names and fresh stock at the club. A 1-0 loss against leaders Liverpool has seen the North London side drop down from 6th place to 8th in the Premier League standings.

They now sit in unfamiliar territory where they play catchup with the other top-six sides, in search of a Champions League spot for next season. The switch from Mauricio Pochettino to Jose Mourinho was supposed to help stay away from such problems.

Worryingly for them the fight for CL football next season is more gruelling than the fight for the Premier League title. If they are to launch any sort of threat on the rest of the clubs fighting for elite European statue, dipping into the market is the only way to reload and get firing again.

Adding to their failure on the pitch is the longterm loss of captain and striker Harry Kane. This has left them with little firepower at the top end of the pitch and has left the squad thin. Another issue persisting, Christian Eriksen‘s willingness to leave the club. He is edging closer to a move out of North London.

The busy period is over but the knockout phase and home stretch of the EPL are approaching. They need to end strong after the changes made at the helm. With all these problems befalling on Jose almost simultaneously, few fresh faces wouldn’t hurt the club.
