Spurs 3-1 Aston Villa

Debutants: Engels, Heaton, Trezeguet, Elmohamady, Anwar El Ghazi, Wesley, and Luiz (Villa), Ndombele (Spurs).

  • The scoreline is not fair to judge Heaton’s stupendous effort to save the day. He stopped a certain goal from Eriksen’s free-kick, acted as a sweeper-keeper to clear out the danger with his head and feet.
  • Engels and Ahmed Elmohamady was strange picks but immense in their debuts. The Belgian center half won 6 out of 8 duels.
  • El Ghazi was poor, lacking in quality. Wesley, their record signing showed some glimpses of his class, contributing to McGinn’s goal.
  • Trezeguet, a tricky dribbler, was the effective offensive options for the Villa. The Egyptian linked up well with Elmohamady and almost broke the game wide open late in the first half.
  • Jota came off the bench to offer some spark and offensive play. Didn’t get going as Villa was soaking up constant pressure in the latter stages of the game. Luiz neither had much training nor the minutes to get rated.
  • Ndombele, the star of the show, proved his worth on his debut. He turned the game around in Spurs’ favor by rocketing a long-range finish and dictated the tempo throughout. Marvelous debut.
