Andre Gomes was brought in on a permanent basis for a fee of £22 million. Gomes had a larger than life impact last season whenever he was fit.

He settled well into the central role last season and provided steely performances in the middle of the park. With the departure of Idrissa Gueye, Gomes is expected to take on bigger responsibilities and should anchor the team in defensive midfield.

The Portuguese international won a lot of hearts last term, as he contributed not only defensively but also offensively. Marco Silva expects nothing less from him this season. Gomes is a valuable addition to the Toffees side.

Everton didn’t stop recruiting midfielders. They went on to sign Fabian Delph from Manchester City for a fee of £8 million and Jean-Philippe Gbamin from Mainz 05 for a reported fee of £22 million. Gbamin’s unknown quantities might be intriguing too many.

Primarily a defensive midfielder, Gbamin has the ability to play anywhere across the midfield, giving Silva a lot of options. Delph adds experience and a source of inspiration in the team, being a two-time Premier League winner he knows what it takes to be at the top of the pyramid.

Marco Silva will need his help to transmit that willpower to the rest of the team. Apart from Delph’s leadership skills, his versatility of playing in midfield as well as comfortably slotting himself in at left-back is a major plus for Everton.
