The Cherries are off the mark in this summer transfer window after they announced the signing of Lloyd Kelly from Bristol City on May 25.

Bournemouth might have pulled off one of the best transfers this window and it’s only just opened.

A player who came close to joining the Reds and attracted interested from across England will join the Premier League under the guidance of Eddie Howe.

More from AFC Bournemouth

The Anfield side was considered to be big favourites for the 20-year-old Englishman but the asking price of £13 million was too much for a defender with no Premier League experience.

That and the fact they paid £8m for Andrew Robertson, a player who is now considered the best left back in the world of football has made them turn away.

They would have been paying double digits for a backup defender and a player not guaranteed to get a regular start.

He will prove to be an amazing signing for Bournemouth

Even though the Reds withdraw it does not mean the player was not worth every buck.

Kelly is an exciting young talent to play in an every-improving Cherries side. Yes, the end to the 2018-19 Premier League season is one they’d one want to forget. However, there are some important moments to take from their campaign.

If Howe completes the signing of Nathaniel Clyne from Liverpool, we could see one of the best-attacking fullback pairs outside of the top six.

Before making the Premier League switch, Kelly was at Bristol City since the tender age of 12-years-old. He made his debut for the club when he was 18-years-old and has since been an influential figure in the team.

He managed a total of 43 games in his time as a Robin. During this time he scored two goals and assisted one for the club.

Howe’s excitement is not surprising

There is no doubting Kelly will be a starter for Bournemouth and will entertain on the Premier League stage. The manager Eddie Howe is right to be extremely excited about him joining.

"Lloyd is an exciting talent and a player of real potential, while at the same time already possessing good experience for someone so young. He is athletic, versatile, physically excellent and has a very bright future ahead of him.I’m delighted that we have been able to strike so early in the summer and look forward to working with Lloyd during the coming seasons.
