Liverpool’s best moments come mostly on European nights, and especially at Anfield. The crowd always counts as an extra outfielder for them in a special atmosphere.

On route to Istanbul where Liverpool and AC Milan handed the world one of the most historic and memorable nights in Champions League history, Liverpool welcomed an in-form Olympiakos side to Anfield.

Rafa’s side was off the pace and nowhere near the form the travelling side was showing in the competition. The Reds were on the brink of getting eliminated from the cup as early as the group stages. Led by Steven Gerrard, Liverpool needed to score two or more goals on the night, or else they would suffer another dreadful season while sitting seventh in the Premier League standings at the time.

As always, the Reds made it that extra bit difficult for themselves to overturn the fixture after conceding first through a Rivaldo opener (Brazil was boasting probably the best-attacking frontlines in those years, he was ruthless in front of goal).

After the second half kicked off, Rafa’s Reds were quick out the blocks and scored in the first three minutes of the first half through Sinama Pongolle (If you don’t remember him can you call yourself a true Red?). The next came in uncertain times, probably long after all the fans had given up on the team. An 80th-minute strike by another unlikely source, Neil Mellor got Anfield back on their feet.

Then the leader Stevie took the game and turned in on its head! An 86th-minute Gerrard special from outside the box that rocked the Kop! It sealed the fate of the away side and little did the club from Merseyside know, this would be the greatest Champions League run they’d journey on in the history of these players lives.

The final score was 3-1 to the Reds. A night hard to forget.
