Premier League: Manchester City or Liverpool – Who Wins the Title from Here?
Liverpool’s chances of breaking their title drought has decreased due to their poor form, but they’re still in with a shout.
There is no doubt that Liverpool and their fans will be extremely disappointed with their 2019 form. What’s even more worrying is that their attacking trident of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino has arguably failed to find top gear all season, despite all 3 having a fruitful 2017-18 campaign. Mohamed Salah was oddly poor against Everton, and may have cost his team the extra 2 points due to his poor finishing. It seems that Liverpool’s defence, which remains strong, has continuously bailed out their forwards in the past couple months. There is still time to turn this around, but they’ll have to do it now or never.
Remaining Fixtures:
Burnley (H)
Fulham (A)
Spurs (H)
Southampton (A)
Chelsea (H)
Cardiff (A)
Huddersfield (H)
Newcastle (A)
Wolves (H)
With 4 away matches sandwiched between 5 home matches, Liverpool’s remaining schedule literally reads out ‘HAHAHAHAH’ if that means anything to you. With 2 matches against top 6 sides to go, this is no easy run for the Reds. They will need to be sharp, especially against Spurs at home. I am expecting them to draw that match but beat Chelsea at Anfield. Their season will wrap up in a tough fixture against Wolves, who tend to play really well against top 6 sides. Liverpool’s season could come down to that fixture, which would not be ideal.
There is one thing for certain: Mohamed Salah absolutely has to show up if Liverpool are going to be successful in these next 9 matches. They have put all their eggs in his basket this year and he has failed to deliver in the big moments, scoring a shocking 0 goals from open play against top 6 opposition. With colossal fixtures against Spurs and Chelsea to come, Salah has to make the difference in a team that needs his contributions desperately.
What Liverpool do have, is one more home game than Manchester City in these final 9 matches, and that could prove vital. I am still giving Liverpool a very good shot at winning this title, somewhere around 50%, although their attackers need to improve heavily.
Let’s take a look at the Cityzens’ chances:
