What a way to get your team out of the relegation clutches. All but safe are the Saints, but a bit of breathing room after they beat Fulham at home.

If there was ever a doubt of this result going in favour of the Saints over Fulham, then I believe you’ve missed a good part of the English Premier League this season. There has been little to no signs that Claudio Ranieri will bring his club out of the scary depths they’ve been lurking in for the whole campaign.

The highest conceders in the league never fail and conceded another two more goals on the night. Saints were on a road to revenge after losing the reverse fixture due to some silly management by Mark Hughes.

It was then when Claudio had a better chance of survival as he took the first points of this fixture. However, he never met Southampton under their new manager and couldn’t prepare for the rude awakening he experienced last night.

Match Recap

More from Fulham FC

The relegation battle was well-contested throughout the 90 minutes. Two first-half goals were enough to see Ralph’s men take all the spoils on the day. Both teams split the share in the possession stats and shots on goal. They equalled the same amount of shots at goal and shots on target. Fortunately for Southampton, they made it count.

The two goals came from likely outlets, Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse. This was also the only two goals scored for the game also. After the half, both teams came close to getting goals, but nothing materialised from all the attacking done the half.

The second half was the quieter of the two halves and was a lot of nothing. Hasenhuttl’s Saints were able to hold onto a two-goal lead with ease. This return fixture was nothing like the 2-3 thriller experienced at the Cottagers venue. However, it was enough to see the Saints go marching on.

The next fight for the two

Southampton and Fulham prep for three of the worst fixtures imaginable. The former go up against Man United, Spurs and then end off with Watford. The number of points they can take from these three? A big zero considering the quality of players the other sides boast.

The latter again, they have a similar test but take up the challenge against, Chelsea, Leicester City and Liverpool. The number of points to be taken here? The same as the previous prediction… None!
