If you were to start yesterday’s conversation off with… “I’m telling you United will lose.” It would be a laughable notion. Do it today and say, “told you United would lose” it’s a true notion after a silly defeat.

As most of the Premier League clubs partook in the English League Cup, there was one club who again failed to meet expectations. That club was none other than Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.

United had all in favour when the draw for their first Carabao Cup was a home tie against EFL Championship side, Derby County. It had a United win written all over it. Fortunately for the neutral watching – it wasn’t that straight forward.

It was one for the books, quite frankly. The way the game went back and forth, one went ahead, the other levelled. Then again, a new leader and then a second leveller – tied ballgame! It went down to the wire – and a penalty shootout was on show.

Amazing coincidence, was it not?

More from Manchester United

Before this though, the game’s first equaliser for the travelling Rams was of United’s greatest and longest rival (Liverpool) player’s on loan and worthy of a match winner, perhaps.

The free-kick from Harry Wilson stole the show and turned the momentum all in favour of Derby. It was then only, that United struggled to get a goal up and actually suffered the second goal, and were trailing for the first time in the match.

United came back in the nick of time, thanks to what seems to be their best player at the moment, Marouane Fellaini. His goal took the game into extra time. Nothing came of the extra minutes played by both clubs.

Once the game was concluded of all the time available for a football match – it had to be decided by the nail-biting shootout. What a great shootout it was… 16 penalties were taken in total.

It was at that moment also, Phil Jones released… He messed up. A Carabao Cup exit for the Red Devils at the horns of the Rams (ugh… You know what trying to I’m getting at). The game was lost by Jones taking a penalty with pink boots and no goalmouth penetration, yes.

It was almost uncultured of United to go down to the EFL side at Old Trafford. However, it’s become their favourite jam this early part of the season – to go down to wee teams.
