Liverpool’s got a top-class keeper

Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation has been a recurring matter. Arguably, since Pepe Reina, Liverpool hasn’t had a top-class goalkeeper that they can trust. Simon Mignolet shows promising signs in some matches, but makes absolute howlers in others. Loris Karius hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations and lost all the confidence people had on him since the Champions League final.

Improving the position is key and signing Alisson is not only a big statement of intent by Liverpool, but they’re also strengthening a position they needed.

Jürgen Klopp made it very clear that Alisson was his priority when signing a goalkeeper, and despite being linked with a few other players, going back for Alisson shows that he’s Klopp’s chosen one.

Alisson has a very clear characteristic about himself: he is a very good goalkeeper with his feet. For a team that plays with a high-pressing system, based on long-balls to the wings and dominating the space, having a goalkeeper with good distribution is key.

Roma’s campaign last season was highlighted by their defensive resilience, being a very tough team to break down and score against. When the opposition was given a chance, Alisson made sure to be in the right place at the right time. Roma’s defence was the second best in Serie A last season, conceding just 28 goals.

When forced to make a save, Alisson didn’t let the team down. The Brazilian kept 17 clean sheets, a sufficient tally to compete with David De Gea, Éderson, Thibaut Courtois (if he stays), and Hugo Lloris. During last season, Alisson also had a save success rating of 80%, also the best in Italy.

Alisson’s distribution, a quality that he’s known for, is very good. He made 27.7 passes per game, with a success rating of 79%. Alisson also averaged 6.41 successful ball distributions in the season, per Wyscout, showing he can start the build-up from the back.

In terms of his goalkeeping talent, there’s no doubt that Alisson will be a top addition for Liverpool. Despite his decent statistics, Loris Karius certainly needs improvement and the signing of Alisson shows Liverpool’s intent to be a title contender in the Premier League and make a deep Champions League run.
