Alisson Becker – Brazil’s number one

The keeper was born in Novo Hamburgo, a city located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, South Brazil. Alisson joined Internacional’s academy as an eight-year-old, following the path of his brother Muriel, who also played for Inter as a goalkeeper.

During his youth career, Alisson featured for the Brazil national team, playing in the U-17 World Cup for his country in a team that featured Neymar and Philippe Coutinho. At U-21 level, Alisson won the Toulon International Tournament, one of the most prestigious youth tournaments around the world.

The success at youth level was rewarded in 2013 when Alisson made his first-team debut for Internacional. The goalie featured heavily towards the end of that year’s Brasileirão, earning the position of starting keeper ahead of legend Dida.

During the rest of his Internacional tenure, Alisson cemented himself as one of the best goalkeepers in South America. He was rewarded with call-ups for the senior Brazil team, making his debut in 2015 and getting a call-up for the 2016 Copa América.

In 2016, Roma made their move for Alisson and gave the keeper a chance in Europe. Despite having a difficult first season, the departure of Wojciech Szczesny turned out to be Alisson’s lucky break, as he took over the spot of starting goalkeeper and became one of the best number ones in Europe. He broke through as Brazil’s top goalkeeper at the World Cup in Russia.
