The crutches of Liverpool’s excuses not to win anything has been this position along with their goalkeeping muddles. Who’s taking the fall?

Dejan Lovren: What once was a player who was certainly a transfer out of the club has now established himself as the second, first-choice centre back for the team. Klopp has worked Lovren into a more consistent machine. However, the Croatian still has that costing error in him but this will not be enough for him to depart from the club.

Lovren will be at the club for next season.

Virgil van Dijk: The most recent signing of defenders and the most expensive defender in the history of the Premier League, Virgil van Dijk is almost certain to become the next Liverpool skipper. There is no chance the Dutchman will be leaving after Klopp made sure he was a Red last season.

The main centre back will stay and become captain soon.

Joel Matip: The tall Cameroonian might be the defender to be evicted from the Liverpool camp. HIs campaign was less than convincing and has left question marks looming over his value to the club. Maybe one more chance? But this has been the Reds most costing area for several years.

Matip will stay unless a bid at the right price comes. He came on a free – therefore any price is an investment. I see him at Liverpool next season.

Joe Gomez: The young Englishman has been plagued with injuries since joining the Reds. This season was another season down the drain after missing out on the Champions League final and the World Cup with England. When fit, he is one of the best and should be considered at centre back, rather than right back. With Clyne and Trent fighting for a place on the right, he will be a great contender to Lovren, van Dijk, and Matip.

He is still young and has time with Klopp, he will stay beyond the summer.

Ragnar Klavan: The Estonian has been inconsistent to say the least. Not the end of the world, but when out of form, tremendously costing at the back. His contract expires June 2019. If he wants more game time, Liverpool’s not the place to be. If he wants to have a bit-by-bit role, Liverpool’s the place to be.

If we sign another defender – he will be on his way out. But do see him running out his contract at the club.
