The average form exacerbated into disaster as the season got even worse.

The side picked up a measly 6 points from the next 11 games. They finished this run in 18th place, at serious risk of relegation.

The run did include some positive draws: points at home to Arsenal, Tottenham and at Old Trafford to Man United. However, they were battered at home to Leicester, lost at home to Palace, and were all over the place defensively at Wembley.

The horrendous run of results ended as the Saints defeated Watford at St Mary’s in late January. Jack Stephens got the only goal. The upturn in results continued with a point at home to Brighton, and a huge victory away at West Brom.

They moved up to 14th place after the win. Mario Lemina drilled in a fine strike from range, whilst Stephens and James Ward Prowse also netted for the visitors.
