The Argentinian manager was sacked by the club in March, following a poor defeat away to Newcastle. The inability to maintain their momentum, ultimately cost the manager his job.

The loss of their manager was helped on by a number of niggling problems. Although, poor performances were the main reason he lost his first job as a Premier League manager. A factor pestering the then boss and the squad was want away, and now Liverpool player, Virgil van Dijk.

Injuries contributed to the inconsistent form on the pitch. One of the best Premier League defenders, unable to be used, rotting away and unsettling the camp, all in the space of six months. Talk about tough conditions to play in.

Mark Hughes became the manager, but not even he could inspire an immediate revival. Despite booking an FA Cup semi final, the club was winless in 4 league matches. They earned a point at Leicester, but lost at West Ham, Arsenal and at home to Chelsea. The Blues also defeated them in the semi final.
