Chelsea made a mess of things in their tie but were facing a team with a fight just as important. What was once a title-winning team is now at the brink of being a Europa team.

Chelsea threw away the biggest chance of them getting to fourth place over Liverpool. Now the fate of their Champions League entry lies in the hands of others. Two points situates them behind Liverpool, and four points out of reach from Spurs. This means third place is but a view that can be gazed upon by the Stamford Bridge side.

It could have been a lot worse if the Terriers could hold on to the lead after scoring first at Stamford Bridge. It took the game 50 minutes to see its first goal and then another 10 minutes to see the second, which was the equaliser.

Laurent Depoitre was the man to keep Huddersfield in the Premier League and Marcos Alonso was once again the Blue hero – who kept their Champions League dream alive till Sunday. Wagner’s men were just brilliant to soak up all the pressure and allow in one goal of the 22 shots taken at them.

Chelsea should have been up by several goals before the break but the resilience of the terriers’ tough skin – kept them in the game. The travelling team have placed themselves in 16th place, four points off Swansea City – making sure they are a Premier League side for season.

They now have a trip with nothing to worry about except dropping below the Saints. A perfectly executed job by a team who were undoubtedly, firm favourites to go down.
