The Sunday of Matchday 36 had two matches. Both sides of Manchester left celebrating after victories over a couple of London clubs.
The days’ action began at the London Stadium when West Ham United hosted the champions, Manchester City. Both sides put their best eleven forward with the Hammers trying to avoid a tumultuous collapse and the Citizens looking to make history.
West Ham 1-4 Manchester City
Leroy Sane gave Man City the lead inside 13 minutes. The recently awarded PFA Young Player of the Year adds his 10th goal of the season to his tally. City added to their tally in the match with an own goal by former City star, Paulo Zabaleta.
The Hammers got on the board just before the halftime whistle through Aaron Cresswell. The one goal deficit didn’t last long at all after goals from Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho settled the 4-1 victory for Manchester City.
The win sets a couple of marks for Manchester City with three games left. First, they have equaled the Premier League record of 30 wins in a season. With their last three matches against Huddersfield, Brighton, and Southampton, that record will surely be broken.
Second, they are one win away from setting the Premier League points record. They currently sit at 93 points and the record is 95. If they win two and draw one of their remaining games, it would be the first time in EPL history a team hit 100 points.
Lastly, Man City are two goals away from the EPL goals in a season record and their +76 goal differential would set an EPL record as well. If they do manage to set all four of these records, which I fully expect them too, this 2017-18 Manchester City team will have the greatest single season in Premier League history.
The Hammers are nowhere close to setting any of these records. A second straight 4-1 defeat means they sit in 15th, but only three points above relegation.
The rest of their season opponents are top-half teams (Leicester, Man United, and Everton). With a couple of losses, West Ham might get relegated. Hammers fans should be worried.
