The Manchester United first-choice stopper is the least likely to achieve the award this term. De Gea and his teammates disappointed after a rather underwhelming campaign this term.

The Spaniard’s clean sheets counted for little this season, unable to save his United team and boss, Jose Mourinho from exits across most competitions. The English giants were fighting on all fronts this season and only having an FA Cup semi-final coming and a favourable second-place finish in the Premier League.

When you think United in recent years you think, ‘De Gea United’. It’s no secret many believe if Mourinho didn’t have one of the world’s best between the uprights – United would be nowhere close to where they stand in the league table. I am one who strongly believes in this statement, after seeing him fail at crucial times this season.

No fault of his as he was let down on many occasions by his defensive line. However, what de Gea does between the posts is nothing short of amazing. The high amount of 16 clean sheets in 33 showings – is no easy achievement and deserves more than just credit. It also might deserve a move to European giants, Real Madrid.

Although being nominated four years in the row, nothing this season suggests he or any other United player deserves the award. Better luck next time de Gea, that’s if you are still a Premier League player after the summer window.
