As expected, a rather one-sided affair went on at Basel, Switzerland. Man City denied any chances of an upset in the return leg after pegging Basel down to four goals with no reply.
Basel, before their home encounter in the Champions League, counted their blessings (what little they felt they received in this season’s charge).
But as they and their fan expected – the night was long and filled with goals going in on the one end.

Man City were a hurdle too high for Basel. The guests were more clinical, faster and simply better. Congratulations to them, see you in Manchester again! #FCBMCFC #FCBasel1893 #UCL #FCBvCity #zämmestark pic.twitter.com/jrXk8mFHad
Make no mistake, from the first whistle, to the dying minutes – Basel had their opportunities in front of goal. However, the different in class and money spent was on display. Man City, unlucky not to win by a larger margin.
FCB (Basel), were poor not to get on the score sheet. Dimitri Oberlin, was the worst player on the night, missing every chance fed to him on a silver platter. Ederson was tested with some threatening shots, but parried out all shots fired at him.

Man City from the first whistle to the final whistle
From the start Manchester City showed no signs of giving the host a rest. They hassled their goal post, continuously – which resulted in great reward.
Ilkay Gundogan was on target twice in the game. His first was quite a smart set-piece, with an acute-angled header. His second, just as spectacular when he curved home the final goal of the match.
He started things for the visitors, and he went on to end things for them as well.

Even though, not much could be done about the goals scored – the keeper’s inability to make a difference in the first half, played a major hand in the goals conceded.
He redeemed himself in some situations as the game wore on. Other players on the score sheet, Bernardo Silva, and none other than, Sergio Aguero
This round of 16 is as good as over – after four away goals scored by the Citizens. Only records can be broken, or humiliation can be stopped. Let’s see what Pep has up his sleeve when they return to the Etihad.
