Manchester United winger Memphis Depay has commented on his position on the Red Devils bench, and his remarks show the mentality of a failure.

Memphis Depay hasn’t lived up to expectations since joining Manchester United, it’s fair to say. But now the winger has insisted he won’t be happy to sit on the bench for much longer because he is ready to play for Jose Mourinho’s team, reports The Sun.

Depay arrived from PSV Eindhoven for £25 million just over a year ago. He was coming off the back of a season where he scored 22 league goals in 30 games. They’re impressive stats. They really are.

However, it was the Dutch league, and with all due respect, that does draw some scepticism immediately. Depay has done nothing to dampen that. If anything, people have now gone beyond scepticism and moved on to pure doubt.

Depay has offered nothing so far in his year in Manchester. Not when he has started and not from the bench. So to now come out and say that a supporting role is not for him. That he wont wait around for ever.

That tells you all you need to know about the 22-year-old. All you need to know about his mentality and where he sees himself. Ultimately, that is the problem. It’s not the talent in his feet. It’s what’s in his head.

More from Manchester United

He says he might leave if he isn’t in the first team soon. So, he actually believes he should be playing then? That’s a real thought that he has? Okay. Right there is an example of the difference between belief and delusion.

Depay is a young player with a lot of work to do to improve and fulfil his potential. You have to put that on yourself. Work hard to get to where you want to be. Where Depay wants to be is in the United starting lineup.

But instead of working harder to get there and making changes, Depay just assumes the club have got it wrong. Two managers in a row have got it wrong. This attitude and mentality is the reason why he is where he is.

It’s not me. I’m great. I’m ready. What am I doing on the bench? I’m ready for the first team right now. Drop Marcus Rashford, get me in. This mentality; this is why he is a flop at Old Trafford. To think he could even put out a vague threat to Manchester United is yet more delusion.

You might leave? Oh, no. They’ll be heartbroken over that. That’ll be devastating after all you’ve contributed. It’ll be like losing Bebe all over again. Those poor fans. Depay obviously believes he’s done developing now. So an eventual exit looks inevitable.

Where does the Dutchman think he’s going to go anyway? Another top European club like United? Probably. Depay likely thinks he’ll get a move to Barcelona. Hey, if they check out his United highlights he might just end up in Barcelona, actually. Barcelona B.

That’s about as close to Barcelona as he’s going to get. Well, apart from in his own mind, of course. In there he already tarts for them every day of the week.
