Manchester United are being linked with a move for Leicester City midfielder – and former United academy player – Danny Drinkwater.

Manchester United are not having the best of times on the field right now, but moves are already afoot off of it. United are interested in bringing Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater back to the club, according to The Sun.

The transfer could cost United around £30 million but would see Drinkwater return to the club he initially joined at the age of nine. Mourinho, despite spending around £150 million in the summer, is in need of reinforcements and Drinkwater could be one of the signings to be made.

The United midfield has been one of the hottest topics in the Premier League in recent weeks. Do United need an extra player in the center of the park? Is Pogba able to play the position he’s currently being deployed in?

Is Marouane Fellaini the right man to play defensive midfielder? Should Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick or Morgan Schneiderlin be getting more of a chance to play? Everything circles around Pogba, though, and that’s why a move for Drinkwater would be good for both the Frenchman and the club.

Drinkwater has an unbelievable work rate and protects the back four throughout a game. The Englishman also has great energy to cover the ground and get around the park and fill in for his teammates.

More from Manchester United

His competitive spirit and work ethic sets a great tone for everybody around him and allows the team’s flair to shine through. At Leicester, that was Riyad Mahrez. At Manchester United, it would be Pogba. And, ultimately, that’s the end game for United now.

Getting the best out of Pogba is the be all and end all of their next moves in the transfer market. United need to add more work rate, energy and defensive discipline to their midfield and nobody on the current roster necessarily gets the job done.

Herrera can get around the field but isn’t disciplined defensively; Carrick is a good passer but not particularly mobile; Fellaini hasn’t succeeded in the job so far this season and Schneiderlin has never really settled at Old Trafford. Drinkwater ticks all the boxes, however.

He’s not a player who would need to change to fit United’s requirements. He’s ready now, right out of the box. Mourinho would probably still need another midfielder next to Drinkwater to really give Pogba the license to roam, but that’s a debate for another time. Drinkwater would be one piece of the puzzle.

The 26-year-old is not the most glamorous name around, and maybe people would scoff at the price tag, too. But the end game now has to be getting the best out of Pogba; putting the Frenchman in position to win games for Manchester United.

Then Danny Drinkwater is an ideal signing to help do that.
