Having won on Tyneside in November, West Ham are seeking to complete a first league-double over Newcastle since 2018/19; the Magpies are unbeaten in five visits to East London, never before have they enjoyed a long sequence.

West Ham United vs Newcastle United Preview

This is the start of a massive week for Newcastle United, so can they enhance their Champions League chances with a victory in East London? Last weekend, Eddie Howe's team were dumped out of the FA Cup, beaten 2-1 by Brighton on a rather eventful afternoon at St James' Park. Alexander Isak's spot-kick broke the deadlock, with both teams actually ending the 120 minutes a man light, Anthony Gordon stupidly sent off for the hosts, before the Seagulls snatched victory in extra time.

Back in the Premier League, the Toon Army start the weekend sixth, despite actually losing four of their last six outings, most-recently beaten 2-0 by Liverpool at Anfield. Coming up on Sunday, Newcastle will take on the champions-elect again, this time in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley, as they desperately seek to end their 70-year wait for domestic silverware. So, Howe's players may perhaps be distracted by that looming Wembley date but, before then, the Magpies need points, given how tight the race for European qualification currently is.

West Ham United meantime, having competed in Europe the last three seasons prior to this one, would also be expecting to be in the race for a top eight finish, but this campaign certainly hasn't panned out that way. Julen Lopetegui was sacked in January, arguably the most noteworthy of his six league wins in charge did come on Tyneside on a Monday night in November.

Fast forward to the present, there are signs that Graham Potter is starting to figure things out, overseeing back-to-back victories against Arsenal and then Leicester, with Tomáš Souček and then Jarrod Bowen the scorers in the latter. This has seen the Hammers move up to 15th, with little tangible left to play for, but their supporters will still be determined to witness a victory.

West Ham United vs Newcastle United Head-to-Head Record

West Ham United Team News

Given that this is West Ham's first fixture for 11 days, Graham Potter has had plenty of time on the training ground to get his ideas across. However, Crysencio Summerville, Michail Antonio and Niclas Füllkrug remain sidelined long-term, while both Vladimír Coufal and Lucas Paquetá are doubts.

Potter is likely to stick with the back three shape that's produced improved performances and results, with Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen forming an attacking pairing, while Evan Ferguson is still yet to start a match since arriving on loan from Brighton. Meantime, teenager Oliver Scarles could continue to get the nod over Emerson Palmieri at left-wing-back.

West Ham United predicted lineup vs Newcastle United: (5-3-2): Areola; Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Cresswell, Scarles; Álvarez, Souček, Ward-Prowse; Kudus, Bowen.

West Ham United Player to Watch vs Newcastle United

Jarrod Bowen has eight goals to his name this season, while he's only ever scored once in ten attempts against Newcastle.

Newcastle United Team News

Anthony Gordon's red card last weekend means he now begins a three-match suspension that incorporates the EFL Cup Final, while both Sven Botman and Lewis Hall are now sidelined due to injuries.

Thus, Tino Livramento will fill-in at left-back, while it'll be interesting to see how Eddie Howe choses to fill Gordon's void; Harvey Barnes is the more natural deputy, but he may choose to deploy Joelinton out-wide. Incidentally, the Brazilian will miss the Magpies' next two league fixtures if cautioned.

Lastly, in goal, Nick Pope has started the last two Premier League matches, before Martin Dúbravka was reinstated between the sticks against Brighton, so it'll be interesting to see who is donning the gloves, especailly with Sunday in mind.

Newcastle United predicted lineup vs West Ham United: (4-2-3-1): Pope; Trippier, Schär, Burn, Livramento; Tonali, Guimarães, Joelinton; Murphy, Barnes, Isak.

Newcastle United Player to Watch vs West Ham United

Alexander Isak's spot-kick last Sunday took his tally to 22 for the season, while the Swede has scored five in four previous meetings with West Ham, on target during both previous outings at the London Stadium.

West Ham United vs Newcastle United Prediction

We are backing West Ham for victory on Monday night. The Hammers have looked improved in recent weeks, while Newcastle's players could well be distracted by Sunday's looming League Cup Final, so we're forecasting the Irons will take full advantage: West Ham United 2-1 Newcastle United.
