Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa - Premier League: TV channel, prediction, team news and lineups
By Ben Gray
Aston Villa have won three of their last four visits to Tottenham, as many as they managed in the previous 21 trips beforehand, now seeking a third successive victory in N17 for the first time in almost exactly 100 years to the day, last achieving this on 1 November 1924.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa Preview
These two sides finished fourth and fifth last season, with Aston Villa pipping Tottenham to Champions League qualification by only two points, with both set to be battling it out for a top four spot once again. Well, Spurs actually start the weekend down in eighth, five points worse off than their visitors, due to their continued inconsistent form. Last Sunday, Ange Postecoglou's team were beaten 1-0 by previously winless Crystal Palace, meaning the Lilywhites have now won four and lost four in the league.
However, their hopes of ending the club's 17-year trophy draught remain alive via the EFL Cup, after Tottenham dumped out Manchester City on Wednesday, Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr the unlikely scorers, setting up a quarter-final showdown with Man United a week before Christmas. Of course, what all Spurs supporters crave above all else is silverware, but league form is undoubtably important too, with Tottenham needing a victory here to get back into top four contention, while defeat would leave them a whopping eight points adrift.
Aston Villa meantime will feel they should be even further clear of their hosts as they travel to North London, following last weekend's frustrating draw with Bournemouth, finally taking the lead late on through Ross Barkley, only for the Cherries to snatch a share of the spoils with the last kick of the afternoon. Unai Emery's team have still lost only once in the league thus far, albeit three of their last four matches have been draws.
In mid-week, the Claret and Blue Army were dumped out the EFL Cup by Crystal Palace; Jhon Durán equalised for a much-changed Villa side, but a catalogue of defensive errors saw them exit the competition. This is now the start of a crucial week for the Villans, given that they'll travel to Brugge on Wednesday and then Anfield next Saturday night, so will they start it with a statement win over Spurs?

Tottenham Hotspur Team News
Wednesday's win over Manchester City may have come at a cost, given that both centre-halves Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero were taken off injured. Romero should be fine, but van de Ven could face weeks on the sidelines, meaning Radu Drăgușin will come in here. Meanwhile, captain Son Heung-min remains a doubt and Wilson Odobert is sidelined, so Timo Werner is likely to deputise wide-left, after 17 year old Mikey Moore was handed his full-Premier League debut last weekend, while fit-again Richarlison is also an option. James Maddison remained an unused substitute in mid-week, with Dejan Kuluševski having surpassed him in the midfield pecking order and the pair seemingly unable to function well in tandem.
Tottenham Hotspur predicted lineup vs Aston Villa: (4-2-3-1): Vicario; Porro, Drăgușin, Romero, Udogie; Matar Sarr, Bissouma, Kuluševski, Johnson, Werner; Solanke.
Tottenham Hotspur Player to Watch vs Aston Villa
Dominic Solanke scored home and away against Villa last season, so can he end his six-game goal draught here?
Aston Villa Team News
Unai Emery, in contrast to his opposite number, made ten changes in the EFL Cup, hoping that added freshness can be a benefit. John McGinn was the only player to start against both Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, but there was a first appearance since the opening day of last season for Tyrone Mings, following over a year out due to an ACL injury. Here, Emery will largely revert to last weekend's team, with Jacob Ramsey chosen over both Leon Bailey and Jaden Philogene out-wide, while Wednesday's scorer Jhon Durán will be back amongst the substitutes.
Aston Villa predicted lineup vs Tottenham Hotspur: (4-2-2-2): Martínez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Onana, Tielemans, McGinn, Ramsey; Rogers, Watkins.
Aston Villa Player to Watch vs Tottenham Hotspur
Ollie Watkins has scored during three of his four appearances at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, including last November's 2-1 success, so can he further improve that ratio?
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa Prediction
We are backing Aston Villa to claim victory. In the absence of van de Ven, we can see the Villans exploiting Spurs' high-line, while Tottenham continue to be inconsistent in general, hence why we're forecasting an away win, with goal almost guaranteed: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Aston Villa.
