Spurs take on Southampton by the South Coast on Sunday night

Tottenham have not won any of their last six visits to St Mary's when the match has been played in front of a crowd, their most-recent outing by the South Coast a thrilling 3-3 draw, after which Antonio Conte went on an infamous rant, which proved to be his final match in charge. Both teams have scored in each of the last eight encounters between the pair, clashes that have produced 35 goals, with another high-scoring affair likely here.

Southampton vs Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Can Tottenham Hotspur get back to winning ways? Amazingly, since early-November, Spurs have won only one of eight outings across all competitions, with this sole victory, bizarrely, that emphatic 4-0 dismantling of Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad. Subsequently, Ange Postecoglou's team have failed to win any of their last five, suffering back-to-back Premier League defeats, including completely capitulating at home to Chelsea last Sunday, 2-0 up inside 11 minutes but falling apart after that, ultimately very easily beaten 4-3.

So, having now lost more games than they've won in the Premier League, the Lilywhites have sunk into the bottom half of the table and, with Liverpool (H) and then Nottingham Forest (A) their next two fixtures, the pressure will crank up to 11 if their winless streak continues here. In mid-week, Tottenham did fail to put three Europa League points on the board, now winless in three European outings, very fortunate to leave Ibrox with a draw, withstanding plenty of Rangers pressure either-side of Dejan Kuluševski's well-taken equaliser in Glasgow. Now though, Spurs simply cannot fail to win this trip to the South Coast.

Well, given Spurs' current form, a clash with the Premier League's basement boys should be just the tonic they need, but this is exactly why the traveling fans are so fearful. Last weekend, Russell Martin's team were beaten once again, this time by Aston Villa, the 1-0 scoreline not doing justice how dominate the hosts were.

Having also been smashed 5-1 by Chelsea at home there days earlier, the Saints have yielded just a solitary point from their last five outings, their sole win all season coming against Everton in early-November, sat rock-bottom of the division, eight points adrift safety already, seemingly destine to go straight back down. The hope for Southampton supporters? Both Palace and Ipswich claimed their very-first wins of the season against Tottenham, so the Saints will certainly believe an upset is possible when beleaguered Spurs visit St Mary's on Sunday night.

Southampton vs Tottenham Hotspur Head-to-Head Record

  • Matches Played: 203.
  • Southampton Wins: 65. Draws: 52. Tottenham Hotspur Wins: 86.

Southampton Team News

Goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale and Gavin Bazunu are both sidelined, while Alex McCarthy hasn't been seen since his chaotic display against Liverpool, meaning fourth-choice Joe Lumley will once again be donning the gloves. Russell Martin is also short of defenders, considering Jan Bednarek is injured, Jack Stephens is serving the second of his five-match ban, while Armel Bella-Kotchap is in the proverbial wilderness. Will Smallbone, Adam Lallana, Maxwel Cornet, Paul Onuachu and Ross Stewart are also sidelined, but Adam Armstrong and Cameron Archer have formed a threatening strike partnership in recent weeks, albeit the former must be careful, as he's one booking away from a ban.

Southampton predicted lineup vs Tottenham Hotspur: (5-3-2): Lumley; Bree, Harwood-Bellis, Wood, Walker-Peters, Manning; Fernandes, Downes, Dibling; Armstrong, Archer.

Southampton Players to Watch vs Tottenham Hotspur

Tyler Dibling has been unquestionably the star of this underwhelming Saints side so far, and they'll be reliant on the teenager to be their creative spark once again.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News

In Ange Postecoglou's defence, he is missing an array of key players. First-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario remains sidelined, as are attackers Mikey Moore, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert, while Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended until Boxing Days for domestic competitions. At the back meantime, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven both started completely out of nowhere against Chelsea but, as suspected, neither were actually fully fit, with the former hobbling off earlier on, while the Dutchman didn't last the entire 90 minutes either.

So, with Ben Davies also out due to a hamstring tear, Radu Drăgușin alongside Archie Gray appears set to be the makeshift pairing once again, in front of Fraser Forster, who was outstanding on Thursday, facing his former club here. Elsewhere, Yves Bissouma is banned, while Timo Werner was hooked at half time at Ibrox, with Postecoglou describing his performance as "not acceptable". As a result of both, Pape Matar Sarr, mid-week scorer Dejan Kuluševski and Dominic Solanke will all return to the starting lineup.

Tottenham Hotspur predicted lineup vs Southampton: (4-3-3): Forster; Porro, Gray, Drăgușin, Udogie; Matar Sarr, Maddison, Kuluševski, Johnson, Son Heung-min; Solanke.

Tottenham Hotspur Player to Watch vs Southampton

Son Heung-min scored just a fifth goal of the season last Sunday, coming in stoppage time, very much too little too late, but the Saints are his favourite opponents, netted 12 times against Southampton to date, more than against anyone else in his entire career.

Southampton vs Tottenham Hotspur Prediction

If you're tuning into this one at the rather unusual time of 7pm (UK time) do so safe in the knowledge that this'll produce goals! Southampton have kept just a solitary clean sheet across their last 27 Premier League matches, while Spurs have enjoyed a shutout in only six of their last 44 league engagement. It would very Tottenham to falter here once again, but we simply can't see it happening, with Spurs' attacking quality surely set to be enough to defeat the Saints: Southampton 1-3 Tottenham Hotspur.
