Southampton have won seven of their last ten home games against Everton, also knocking the Toffees out of the EFL Cup on penalties in September, so will the struggling Saints prevail here?

Southampton vs Everton Preview

Can Southampton climb off the foot of the Premier League table? Last weekend, Russell Martin's team put up a good fight away to Manchester City, only beaten 1-0, but this doesn't help their fight against the drop in any tangible way. In fact, due to other results, the Saints are now bottom of the table, which isn't too surprising considering they've yielded just a solitary point from their opening nine fixtures, their lowest tally at this stage of a season in the club's entire history.

Despite this, Southampton reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night, overcoming Stoke. They raced into a 2-0 lead, Taylor Harwood-Bellis breaking the deadlock before Adam Armstrong converted a spot-kick, only for Stoke to fight-back, equalising and seemingly setting up a penalty shootout, only for James Bree's long-range strike to see the Saints advance. So, can Southampton take confidence from that and claim their maiden Premier League victory of the campaign here?

Everton meantime, having been dumped out the EFL Cup by the Saints on penalties at Goodison in round three, have had a free-week to prepare for this crucial clash. Sean Dyche's team make the 211 mile journey to the South Coast currently unbeaten in five, just about maintaining that streak against Fulham last weekend, with Beto powering home an equaliser deep into stoppage time. The Toffees beat Ipswich in their most-recent away fixture a fortnight ago, which was their first away league win since December, so can the Blues now go back-to-back and pull further clear of the bottom three?

Southampton Team News

Russell Martin went strong for the mid-week League Cup victory over Stoke. Flynn Downes lost his place in midfield, with Lesley Ugochukwu coming in alongside Matheus Fernandes, while Ryan Fraser returned out-wide, having served his one-match ban at the Etihad. Tyler Dibling was the noteworthy omission on Tuesday, but his minutes are merely being managed, so the 19 year old winger will back back in here. Lastly, left-back has been a bit of a problem position, so will James Bree's long-range strike in the EFL Cup see him keep the spot, or will any of Kyle Walker-Peters, Charlie Taylor or Ryan Manning replace the mid-week match-winner?

Southampton predicted lineup vs Everton: (4-5-1): Ramsdale; Sugawara, Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Walker-Peters; Ugochukwu, Fernandes, Lallana, Dibling, Fraser; Archer.

Southampton Player to Watch vs Everton

Southampton have, at least, five centre-forward options but, for now, Cameron Archer is the man chosen to lead the line, so can he add to his four goals so far this season?

Everton Team News

Jarrad Branthwaite came off the bench for a brief cameo last weekend, just his second appearance of the season, so will their star centre-back start this time, or has Michael Keane done enough to keep his place alongside James Tarkowski? Both Séamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson were unused substitutes against Fulham, having not featured since 31 August and 15 April respectively, so both would love to see some action here, even if Ashley Young is likely to remain at right-back from the start. Tim Iroegbunam, James Garner, Youssef Chermiti and former Saints striker Armando Broja, who is still awaiting his Everton debut, are sidelined.

Everton predicted lineup vs Southampton: (4-5-1): Pickford; Young, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Gana Gueye, Doucouré, Harrison, McNeil, Ndiaye; Calvert-Lewin.

Everton Player to Watch vs Southampton

Dwight McNeil has been Everton's star man this season, scoring four times so far, now looking to net against Southampton, as he did during his most-recent appearance at St Mary's in October 2022.

Southampton vs Everton Prediction

We're backing Everton to pick up a hard-fought victory here. Sean Dyche's team have been solid and hard to beat in recent weeks, while Southampton simply lack the top-end talent required to compete, so this is unlikely to be one for the purists, but we're forecasting a narrow away win by the South C: Southampton 0-1 Everton.
