Tottenham once again disappointed their fans with defeat against Everton on matchday 22 of the Premier League, in yet another performance that fell short of the club's greatness. On David Moyes' debut, the Toffees put in an excellent performance with three goals in the first half, leaving Spurs without any power to react before the break.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Iliman Ndiaye and an own goal from Archie Gray were responsible for Everton's first-half lead. Spurs tried to respond through Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, but it wasn't enough to prevent Tottenham's 12th defeat, leaving them just four points above Everton and in the relegation battle.
Premir League form table (last 9 games)
PTS | |
---|---|
16. Ipswich | 7 |
17. Wolves | 7 |
18. Tottenham | 5 |
19. Leicester | 4 |
20. Southampton | 2 |
Considering just the last nine games, Tottenham are only 18th in the current Premier League form table, having only picked up more points than Leicester and Southampton, two teams in the relegation zone. Spurs have managed just one win in this run, which also includes two draws and six defeats.
In addition, Tottenham's 12 defeats in the current Premier League season surpassed the club's all-time record for defeats in the competition, leaving behind the negative records of the 1997/98, 2003/04 and 2008/09 seasons.
"We struggled to really get in the game in the first half and that gave Everton and momentum. We gave ourselves a mountain to climb but the players certainly tried to claw the game back but we just fell short. We could not really take control of the game. We had some chances where we probably should have capitalised early on, but in the end it was not enough."Ange Postecoglu
Despite his words trying to explain yet another defeat (via ESPN), coach Ange Postecoglou is under increasing pressure, as this season is only the sixth in which Spurs have lost at least 12 games in 22 matches played.
