Low-scoring finals

To date, considering the '68 edition was decided by a replay, the 17 European Championship Final fixtures have produced 41 goals, a respectable average of 2.4 goals per match, with a goal scored every 41 minutes, factoring in all the extra time periods, which is slightly complicated by the golden goals scored in both '96 and 2000. However, both teams have scored in just three of the last ten Euros finals, with three of the five since the start of the new millennium ending 1-0, so don't expect a goal-fest.

On top of that, the last two major tournament meetings between these nations have both ended goalless, coming at the Bernabéu during Spain '82 and at Wembley in Euro '96, with England prevailing on penalties in the latter, an outcome their supporters would certainly settle for again.

England's S club 5

With all of these stats and facts, we've tried to make them relevant to the game, how it might pan out and who might prevail on Sunday. Well, for the last one, we've thrown that out the window and just included it because we think it's funny. As noted by Opta Joe, England will become the first team at a World Cup or Euros to face five different opponents who's name in English all begins with the same latter, namely the letter S: Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Switzerland and Spain.

The previous record was held by Brazil, who faced four C teams as hosts a decade ago, namely Croatia, Cameroon, Chile and Colombia, before a rather catastrophic conclusion to their campaign. England will hope their love of ess will lead to historic successes.
