It looks like the Saudi Arabian clubs are not planning to stop the splashing of cash anytime soon. And now Al Nassr are preparing to lure Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk to the Middle East.
Al Nassr to shower Van Dijk with money
It is no surprise that Van Dijk's exploits in the heart of Liverpool's defence have made him a target for numerous clubs. According to Spanish outlet Marca, the Dutch centre-back is now the subject of a transfer interest from Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr. The club's general director has already held a meeting with the player's representatives and they are formulating an offer that would make him the world's highest-paid defender.
Turning Van Dijk's head will not be a simple task as the defender is still performing to world-class standards and has much affection for Liverpool. He played an important role in keeping his club in the title race till the end of 2023/24. He also led them to Carabao Cup victory after scoring the winner in the final against Chelsea.
The arrival of new boss Arne Slot at Merseyside will be another reason why it might be difficult to convince Van Dijk to move as he is eager to play under his fellow Dutchman. Besides, Liverpool themselves will be reluctant to sell their captain.
"I still have a year left on my contract. I am club captain and I have made it clear I am there for the new coach and enthusiastic over the next season"
- Virgil van Dijk
But Al Nassr are determined to add more star power to their team in order to wrest the title from rivals Al Hilal. Despite having names like Ronaldo, Brozovic, and Mané they ended the season as runners-up in the Saudi Pro League, 14 points behind the champions. Van Dijk is not the only big name being targeted by the club. They have also been negotiating a deal for Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny who they believe will be more effective than David Ospina.
