Prem Player of the Round: Cody Gakpo

The Round of 16 has been played and 8 teams are through to the quarter-finals. Many players have shone for their countries, but only one can be player of the round, and that player is: Cody Gakpo.

Cody Gakpo has failed to set the world alight at Liverpool, mainly because Jurgen Klopp insisted on playing him out of position. His best place is on the wing, and he shows it every time he plays for the Netherlands. He was a constant threat for them against Romania. His beautiful, curled shot gave his country the lead, and he provided a great assist to Donyell Malen which helped finish off Romania. He was one of the best players at Euro 2024 and fully deserved his Man of the Match award.

In truth, the Netherlands will face tougher opponents than Romania. They started the match on the front foot and shocked the Netherlands in the first 15 minutes, but they soon returned to type and the Dutch became victorious. They play Turkey next in the quarter-finals and will most likely be favourites for that game. However, the Netherlands has proved to the world that they deserve to in contention for the Euros trophy and Gakpo will certainly be one of their key players if they do clinch it. For the time being, Cody Gakpo is my player of the round!

Honourable Mention: William Saliba

William Saliba was imperious for Arsenal this past season and he was imperious for France against Belgium. He completely nullified Belgium's attack and brought home a close 1-0 win. France looked unconvincing in attacking themselves, as they had all tournaments, but ultimately, experience told, and they were able to topple France. Saliba had to fight for his place in the French team as Deschamps refused to pick him and play him. But Saliba's performances will surely have convinced him that he is the man to lead France to the trophy. He was nearly player of the round but who knows, if he continues his rich vein of form, maybe he'll player of the round in the Quarter finals.
