United lined up with; Onana; Mazraoui, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot; Casemiro, Mainoo; Diallo, Fernandes, Rashford; Mount.
Brighton 2-1 Man United: As it happened
Owing to playing an extra midfielder, United were able to suffocate their hosts with an intense press. The caveat to that, however, is when they did force high turnovers - they had a lack of box threat to capitalise, without a true number nine.
Despite a promising first half an hour from Ten Hag's side, it was Brighton who took the lead. A cross into the box from the right was not properly dealt with, and Mitoma was able to fizz in a cross to Welbeck who haunted his former club by tapping home from very close range.
The sides were separated by one goal at half-time, as Erik Ten Hag introduced last week's hero Joshua Zirkzee for Mason Mount.
Welbeck was trying to get his and Brighton's second of the game, first heading at Onana, before then heading onto the crossbar. These missed chances would soon come to bite.
On the hour mark, United got their equalizer. Diallo was found in space by Mazraoui down the right hand side. The Ivorian cut inside, and found the back of the net despite Van Hecke making contact with the shot.
The rest of the game ebbed and flowed, but deep into injury time, Joao Pedro headed home at the back post after a superbly weighted cross from substitute Simon Adingra. There will be an inquest from Manchester United at just how Pedro was allowed a free header at the back post, but Brighton will not care a jot.
The 2-1 victory makes it two wins out of two to kick off the Fabian Hurzeler era at Brighton. That is twice in three seasons Brighton have scored an injury time winner against United at the Amex stadium.
