These two clubs have only ever met once before, doing so in the European Cup Final of 1982, when Peter Withe's goal saw Villa crowned kings of the continent in Rotterdam; now back in the competition for the first time since they were holders, will Villa Park witness a famous win?

Aston Villa vs Bayern Munich Preview

Aston Villa supporters were made to wait over four decades to see their side competing at Europe's top table again, and it's nights like these that have made the years of turmoil, turbulence and heartbreak all worth it. Now, can their side claim a dream result? Well, a fortnight ago, Unai Emery's team made the perfect start to their debut Champions League campaign, smashing BSC Young Boys 3-0 at Stadion Wankdorf, with Youri Tielemans, Jacob Ramsey and Amadou Onana all on target.

Fair to say, that tougher test await, but in this new-look league phase, every point could be priceless. At the weekend, the Villans were held to a 2-2 draw by Ipswich, indebted to goalkeeper Emi Martínez for the point they earned at Portman Road, and will need to exponentially raise their performance levels if they're to claim even a draw from this glamour Champions League tie.

That's because visitors Bayern Munich travel to Birmingham in red-hot form. On matchday one, the Bavarian juggernauts smashed GNK Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 at Allianz Arena, Harry Kane contributing four of them, the first time since 1990 that any side had scored 9+ in a European Cup fixture.

Either-side of that, Vincent Kompany's side also smashed Holstein Kiel 6-1 and then Werder Bremen 5-0, although their scoring spree did come to an end on Saturday, held to a 1-1 draw by reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen; Aleksandar Pavlović on target. Most were sceptical when Kompany got the job in May, but it's all going rather well so far. Bayern have won seven of their last 13 visits to England, losing only three, with most making the six-times European champions favourites to pick up three points at Villa Park.

Aston Villa Team News

Tyrone Mings, Matty Cash and Boubacar Kamara are all sidelined long-term, while John McGinn sat out Sunday's trip to Ipswich due to a hamstring injury; given that he's been left out the Scotland squad for their forthcoming internationals, this could be worse than first feared. In McGinn's place, Leon Bailey return to the team at the weekend; he's previously scored four times against Bayern Munich, netting against them more frequently than any other opponent in his career. Despite continued shakey performances, Unai Emery is likely to show faith in Diego Carlos, with Ezri Konsa therefore continuing to deputise at right-back.

Aston Villa predicted lineup vs Bayern Munich: (4-2-2-2): Martínez; Konsa, Diego Carlos, Torres, Digne; Onana, Tielemans, Ramsey; Bailey Rogers, Watkins.

Aston Villa Player to Watch vs Bayern Munich

Having scored five goals this season, four of which have come as a substitute, Jhon Durán has been getting all the acclaim but, under the radar, Ollie Watkins has also rediscovered his Midas touch in front of goal. His strike in Suffolk on Sunday means Watkins now has four goals in his last three Premier League outings, so can he find the net in the Champions League for the very first time?

Bayern Munich Team News

The headline team news coming out of Bavarian surrounds Harry Kane, who hobbled off towards the end of Saturday's draw, but is expected to be fit to start here. At the back however, this team are depleted; with Hiroki Itō, Josip Stanišić, Sacha Boey and Tarek Buchmann all sidelined, the naturally left-footed Raphaël Guerreiro will fill-in on the right. Michael Olise has already scored five goals since making the move from Crystal Palace, so will keep his place on the right, chosen over Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman or Thomas Müller.

Bayern Munich predicted lineup vs Aston Villa: (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Guerreiro, Upamecano, Kim Min-jae, Davies, Pavlović, Kimmich, Olise, Musiala, Gnabry; Kane.

Bayern Munich Player to Watch vs Aston Villa

At the age of just 21, Jamal Musiala might already be the star of this team. He's found the net in all three Bundesliga away games so far, having netted 12 times last season, as well as thrice at the Euros, so he's certainly a man the Villa defence need to pay special attention to.

Aston Villa vs Bayern Munich Prediction

Any neutral tuning in will be pleased by the fact we're expecting a goal-fest, although one that ultimately results in an away victory. Bayern Munich have been ultra-impressive, certainly in attack, so far this season, meaning a slightly depleted Villa side will need to play out of their skin to get a result against them: Aston Villa 1-3 Bayern Munich.
