Newcastle have won only two of their last 15 meetings with Brighton, both of these victories have come on Tyneside, with the Seagulls seeking successive victories at St James' for the first time since 1983.

Newcastle United vs Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

It's 26 years since Newcastle most-recently featured in an FA Cup Final. Brighton's sole final appearance came 42 years ago, but both will surely feel they have a great chance of being at Wembley on 17 May for the showpiece occasion.

Newcastle already have one Wembley date to look forward, set to take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Final in a fortnight, although they also faced the run-away league-leaders this week in the Premier League, easily swatted aside 2-0 at Anfield. Eddie Howe's team have now lost four of their last six in the Premier League, but do remain sixth, very much still in the race for Champions League qualification.

Nevertheless, what Newcastle supporters crave above all else is silverware, given that it's now 70 years since the Magpies most-recently won a domestic trophy, beating Man City in the FA Cup Final of 1955. So far in this competition, the Toon Army have enjoyed victories over Bromley and Birmingham City, the latter a 3-2 thriller at St Andrew's, in which Joe Willock scored twice. So now, will Newcastle reach back-to-back FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2006?

Brighton & Hove Albion meantime were beaten FA Cup semi-finalists in 2019 and two years ago, with these the only two occasions they've gone beyond this round since 1986. As they seek to change this fact, Fabian Hürzeler's team smashed Norwich 5-0 in the third round, before a come from behind 2-1 victory over Chelsea last month, in which Georginio Rutter and then Kaoru Mitoma were on target during a memorable Saturday night at the Amex.

Since, the Seagulls have also enjoyed three successive league victories, most-recently defeating South Coast rivals Bournemouth 2-1 on Tuesday; João Pedro and Danny Welbeck the scorers. This has propelled the Albion up to eighth, thereby occupying the final potential European spot, now just a point below their hosts. Brighton were 1-0 winners at St James' Park in October, while they've also won each of the last four FA Cup ties between the two, so who will be celebrating a place in the last eight come Sunday afternoon?

Newcastle United Team News

Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis and Joelinton remain sidelined, while Alexander Isak is also a doubt, after sitting out Wednesday's defeat at Anfield due to a groin injury, which Eddie Howe described as nothing major, but he is unlikely to be risked, with the EFL Cup Final on the horizon. So, as was the case in mid-week, Callum Wilson will lead the attack; William Osula is the alternative.

Elsewhere, Martin Dúbravka had started ten successive Premier League games, before Nick Pope was restored for the last two, so it'll be interesting to see who's donning the gloves this time. Lastly, in midfield, in Joelinton's absence, Joe Willock had been completing the trio, but Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley, scorer last Sunday, will both be hoping for minutes here.

Newcastle United predicted lineup vs Brighton & Hove Albion (4-3-3): Dúbravka; Livramento, Schär, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Guimarães, Willock; Murphy, Gordon, Wilson.

Newcastle United Player to Watch vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Without Isak, Anthony Gordon is likely to be Newcastle's main goal threat, seeking to add to his nine goals this season, previously netting twice against Brighton in his career, both coming for Everton.

Brighton & Hove Albion Team News

The Seagulls travel to the North East without Jason Steele, Igor, Lewis Dunk, Ferdi Kadıoğlu, Joël Veltman and James Milner, leaving Fabian Hürzeler short of defensive options in particular.

Diego Gómez was a surprise starter in midfield on Tuesday, with either Yasin Ayari or Mats Wieffer likely to return this time, while João Pedro could continue to lead the line, chosen over the other mid-week scorer Danny Welbeck, who was the match-winner at Newcastle earlier this season.

Brighton & Hove Albion predicted lineup vs Newcastle United: (4-2-3-1): Verbruggen; Lamptey, Webster, van Hecke, Estupiñán; Baleba, Ayari, Minteh, Mitoma, Georginio; João Pedro.
