For the second time in only four days, Chelsea and Newcastle go head-to-head; the Blues prevailed 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but will it be a different story on Tyneside?
Newcastle United vs Chelsea Preview
Can Chelsea continue their excellent start to the season by beating Newcastle once again? As recently as Sunday, the Blues defeated the Magpies 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer the scorers, a result that leaves them fifth in the Premier League table, winning four of their last six.
Meantime, Enzo Maresca's team also have maximum points in the UEFA Conference League, putting four past both Gent and Panathinaikos, having also smashed Barrow 5-0 in the previous round of the EFL Cup. In short, things are going rather well. Chelsea are five-times League Cup winners, most-recently hoisting the trophy aloft a decade ago, beaten in three finals subsequently, including a heartbreaking, extra time defeat at the hands of Liverpool as recently as February. So, will the Blues book their place in the quarter-finals yet again with victory on Tyneside?
Newcastle United supporters meantime are still dreaming of seeing their side end their domestic trophy draught, that'll extend to seven-decades by the end of this campaign. Eddie Howe's team were beaten League Cup finalists two seasons ago, before being ousted in the last eight by Chelsea back in December, following a penalty shootout in West London.
So far this year, the Toon Army have overcome Nottingham Forest on penalties and then AFC Wimbledon, but come into this tie winless in five, scoring only three goals in these matches, sinking to 12th in the Premier League table. Not so long ago, St James' Park was a near-impenetrable fortress but no more, hence why most make Chelsea favourites to progress through this tie.

Newcastle United Team News
Anthony Gordon missed the weekend's game due to a groin injury, which Eddie Howe described as "not serious", but their star attacker surely has to be a doubt for this one. Meantime, Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman, Matt Targett, captain Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson are all sidelined for certain. Martin Dúbravka suffered a knee injury in the previous round, meaning Odysseas Vlachodimos is likely to be donning the gloves, with Nick Pope given a rest. Howe does have very limited scope for rotation, but Lloyd Kelly, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and William Osula are amongst those who could come into the team.
Newcastle United predicted lineup vs Chelsea: (4-3-3): Vlachodimos; Livramento, Krafth, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Guimarães, Willock; Almirón, Barnes, Isak.
Newcastle United Player to Watch vs Chelsea
Of Alexander Isak's 37 Newcastle goals, 21 have been scored at St James' Park. Back again following a broken toe, can the Swede add to his underwhelming tally of two goals so far this season, having found the net at Stamford Bridge from close-range on Sunday?
Chelsea Team News
Enzo Maresca has been deploying, more or less, entirely different starting XIs at the weekend and then in mid-week, with this side likely to resemble the team that were emphatically victorious in Athens last Thursday. Filip Jörgensen will be in goal, while Renato Veiga, Benoît Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Mykhailo Mudryk have also featured prominently in the Conference League and EFL Cup so far. Meantime, having lost his place in the Premier League team, Enzo Fernández will be donning the armband, as he did against Panathinaikos while, following a rare outing at left-back on Sunday, club captain Reece James will not travel, as he's not fit enough to play more than once a week for the foreseeable future. Lastly, given that he's ineligible to face Manchester United this forthcoming Sunday, it seems safe to assume Jadon Sancho will start this one.
Chelsea predicted lineup vs Newcastle United: (4-2-3-1): Jörgensen; Diasi, Adarabioyo, Badiashile, Veiga; Fernández, Dewsbury-Hall, Sancho, João Félix, Mudryk; Nkunku.
Chelsea Players to Watch vs Newcastle United
He hasn't started a Premier League match since the opening day, but Christopher Nkunku has netted eight times this season, on target in all four Conference League games as well as bagging a hat-trick against Barrow last month, so will he add to his tally on Tyneside?
Newcastle United vs Chelsea Prediction
We're backing Chelsea for victory in this one. The Blues' B-team has had plenty of practice together and is outrageously strong so, even if Newcastle put out their best-available team, we cannot see beyond an away win at St James' Park: Newcastle United 1-3 Chelsea.
