Since the pair were promoted from the Championship together in 2017, Newcastle have won only two of 14 meetings with Brighton, albeit both victories have come at St James' Park, so will the Toon Army have three points to celebrate?

Newcastle United vs Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

Both clubs begin the weekend in potential European positions, following impressive starts to this campaign, so who will enhance their continental ambitions with victory? Brighton make the long 326 mile journey north buoyant, following a famous victory prior to the international break. The Seagulls were 2-0 down at home to Spurs, seemingly set to slump to a second successive defeat, only for three goals in 18 second half minutes, Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter and then Danny Welbeck the scorers, to secure a memorable comeback. As alluded to, Fabian Hürzeler won his first two matches as Brighton boss, before enduring a four-game streak without a victory, but that win over Tottenham gets the Seagulls right back on track, so can they claim another noteworthy scalp here?

Newcastle United meantime commenced the campaign by yielding ten points from the first 12 available, but are now without a win in three. Following a calamitous defeat at Fulham and then a credible draw with Manchester City, the Magpies were left frustrated at Goodison, playing out a very uneventful goalless draw with Everton, in which Anthony Gordon squandered the best chance against his former club, seeing a first half penalty saved. After this one, Eddie Howe's team face Chelsea in the league and the same opposition again in the EFL Cup, before Arsenal come to town in a fortnight, so now would be a good time for the Toon Army to start rebuilding some momentum.

Newcastle United Team News

Neither Alexander Isak nor Callum Wilson were fit enough to face Everton a fortnight ago, but there is optimism that Isak will be able to return up front here, with Anthony Gordon therefore back out on the wing. Captain Kieran Trippier has seemingly regained the starting right-back spot from Tino Livramento, while midfield Joelinton would sit out next weekend's trip to Stamford Bridge suspended if booked.

Newcastle United predicted lineup vs Brighton & Hove Albion: (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schär, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Guimarães, Joelinton; Gordon, Barnes, Isak.

Newcastle United Player to Watch vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Harvey Barnes has been very impressive this season, scoring three Premier League goals, just two shy of his tally for the entitreity of last season already. Having enjoyed some time off during the international break, Barnes will be looking to add to his two career goals against Brighton.

Brighton & Hove Albion Team News

Fabian Hürzeler will be concerned by his lack of centre-back options; with Jan Paul van Hecke already sidelined, Adam Webster hobbled off after just nine minutes against Tottenham so, if the Dutchman does not recover in time, Igor will partner Lewis Dunk. At left-back meantime, Hürzeler has been switching between Ferdi Kadıoğlu and Pervis Estupiñán, with the latter replacing the former at half time of the comeback win. Up front, Danny Welbeck has scored four goals already this season, but has only ever netted once in 16 career appearances against Newcastle. Matt O'Riley, Solly March and João Pedro are all still sidelined.

Brighton & Hove Albion predicted lineup vs Newcastle United: (4-3-3): Verbruggen; Veltman, Dunk, Igor, Estupiñán; Hinshelwood, Baleba, Minteh, Rutter, Mitoma; Welbeck.

Brighton & Hove Albion Player to Watch vs Newcastle United

Yankuba Minteh departed Newcastle to join Brighton this summer, for a reported £30 million fee. The Gambian international never actually made an appearance for the Magpies, and was a sacrificial sale to avoid a PSR points penalty, but Minteh will now get the chance to show the Toon Army what they passed up on.

Newcastle United vs Brighton & Hove Albion United Prediction

Both teams have scored in five of the last six encounters between this duo, a trend we're expecting to continue, but in a fixture that is hard to predict, we're backing Newcastle to claim a narrow win, by virtue of having home advantage: Newcastle United 2-1 Brighton & Hove Albion.
