Newcastle had won three successive meetings with Man United for the first time since 1922, prior to a 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford in May, with the Magpies winning only two of 44 outings at the Theatre of Dreams since 1972.

Manchester United vs Newcastle United Preview

Will Manchester United's miserable form continue? On Boxing Day, the Red Devils were defeated 2-0 by Wolves at Molineux, seeing captain Bruno Fernandes sent off shortly after half time, before conceding directly from a corner, doing so on a second successive Thursday, ten minutes later. As a result, Rúben Amorim's team have now lost four of their last five Premier League outings; no Man United manager has lost four league games quicker in the club's 146-year history.

During this period, the Red Devils have also been dumped out of the EFL Cup by Spurs, but their league position is far more concerning than any silverware aspirations. Amorim's team are currently 14th, closer to the relegation zone than the top four, with a trip to run-away league-leaders Liverpool to come on Sunday. Defeat here would see the Red Devils lose three successive Premier League games for the first time since Boxing Day 2016, while they most-recently did this all without scoring in May 2015, making this a vital fixture for Man United.

In stark contrast to their hosts, Newcastle United are in terrific form, so will certainly fancy their chances of victory. On Boxing Day, the Magpies swatted aside ten-man Aston Villa 3-0 at St James' Park, with Anthony Gordon breaking the deadlock inside 100 seconds, before both Alexander Isak and Joelinton were on target. That's now three successive Premier League victories for Eddie Howe's team, all without conceding, previously smashing both Leicester and Ipswich 4-0, while they've also reached the EFL Cup semi-finals during this period, steamrollering Brentford 3-1.

Thus, this is the first time since February 2002 the Toon Army have seen their side win four consecutive matches, scoring at least thrice in all of them. This means the Magpies have climbed up to fifth but, with this trip to Old Trafford followed by back-to-back visits to North London, taking on Spurs on Saturday and then Arsenal in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final, the difficulty level is likely to increase. So, can Newcastle continue their winning streak, thereby adding to Man United's misery?

Manchester United Team News

Bruno Fernandes' red card at Molineux means he is suspended, so it'll be interesting to see what Rúben Amorim does, considering the captain has started 108 of the last 113 Premier League matches, including each of the last 20. Manuel Ugarte is also banned due to yellow card accumulation, Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelöf and Mason Mount are injured while Marcus Rashford is not in Amorim's plans. Matthijs de Ligt hasn't featured in any of the last three matches due to illness, the Dutchman was back on the bench on Boxing Day, Casemiro is set to replace Ugarte in midfield and Christian Eriksen or Alejandro Garnacho will fill Fernandes' void in the front three. Harry Maguire will miss Sunday's trip to Anfield if booked.

Manchester United predicted lineup vs Newcastle United: (3-4-3): Onana; Yoro, de Ligt, Martínez; Mazraoui, Casemiro, Mainoo, Dalot; Eriksen, Amad, Højlund.

Manchester United Player to Watch vs Newcastle United

Amad has been the star of Man United's mixed season, scoring five goals to date, so can he net against Newcastle, as he did when the pair most-recently met in May?

Martin Dúbravka will face his former club in goal, continuing to deputise for the injured Nick Pope, chosen over Odysseas Vlachodimos. Elsewhere, Tino Livramento is likely to return at right-back, displacing Kieran Trippier, after sitting out the clash with Aston Villa due to illness. Fellow defender Sven Botman did feature in an under-21 match earlier this month, but isn't yet ready to return for the first time since cruciate ligament surgery in March.

Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth and Callum Wilson are also sidelined, but Lewis Miley has come off the bench during the last three matches, having not been seen since March following a metatarsal fracture. Both of Lewis Hall's goals for Newcastle have coincidentally come at Old Trafford while, in attack, Jacob Murphy's red-hot form will see him keep his place. Lastly, Fabian Schär and Sandro Tonali would miss Saturday's visit to Tottenham if cautioned.

Newcastle United predicted lineup vs Manchester United: (4-3-3): Dúbravka; Livramento, Schär, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Guimarães, Joelinton: Murphy, Gordon, Isak.

Newcastle United Player to Watch vs Manchester United

Alexander Isak bagged his 12th of the campaign on Boxing Day, but the Swede has never scored in six attempts against Man United, so can he change that fact on Monday night?

Manchester United vs Newcastle United Prediction

We are forecasting a Newcastle victory. The Magpies are in terrific form, while Man United look devoid of any confidence, purpose or cohesion, so an away win on Monday night would not be a shock by any stretch of the imagination: Manchester United 1-2 Newcastle United.
