Manchester United had won four successive meetings with Ipswich, all without conceding, prior to the 1-1 draw at Portman Road in November.

The Tractor Boys have lost each of their last four visits to Old Trafford, conceding 18 goals and scoring zero, their most-recent victory at the Theatre of Dreams coming in May 1984.

Manchester United vs Ipswich Town Preview

Back in late-November, Rúben Amorim took charge of Manchester United for the very first time at Ipswich, the visitors leading inside 60 seconds through Marcus Rashford, leaving Suffolk with a hard-fought 1-1 draw. That day, the Red Devils were 12th, but now find themselves 15th, having collected just 14 points from 14 fixtures subsequently, with this team yet to show signs of improvement.

On Saturday lunchtime, the Red Devils were staring down the barrel on a third successive league defeat, 2-0 down at Everton inside half an hour. Nevertheless, late goals at Goodison from Bruno Fernandes, an inch-perfect free-kick, and then Manuel Ugarte from long-range salvaged a share of the spoils on Merseyside.

Despite this, Amorim's team remain equidistant away from the bottom three and the European places, going nowhere fast, looking to the Europa League and FA Cup to salvage this season, with ties in both competitions coming up after this. Having said that, their side down the Premier League table simply cannot continue, with Man United in desperate need of a morale-boosting victory here.

The same could be said of Ipswich Town, who badly need points if they're to have any chance of staying in the division. On Saturday, Kieran McKenna's team paid the price for missed chances, beaten 4-1 by Spurs at Portman Road, in a match that was significantly more even than that scoreline might suggest.

This defeat though leaves the Tractor Boys five points from safety, yet to win any of their seven Premier League fixtures in 2025, from which they've yielded just two points. The Blues have already beaten both Tottenham and Chelsea, so can they cause an almighty upset at Old Trafford?

Manchester United Team News

Altay Bayındır, Lisandro Martínez, Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Toby Collyer, Mason Mount and Amad all remained sidelined, leaving Rúben Amorim with very limtied options.

After a lively cameo off the bench at Goodison, surely Alejandro Garnacho will start this time, while Christian Eriksen could displace Casemiro at the base of midfield. Having come off the bench during the last two games, young striker Chido Obi-Martin will be hoping for more action here, while January recruits Ayden Heaven and Sékou Koné are both hoping to make their debuts.

Manchester United predicted lineup vs Ipswich Town: (3-4-2-1): Onana; Yoro, Maguire, de Ligt; Dalot, Ugarte, Erkisen, Dorgu; Fernandes, Garnacho, Zirkzee.

Manchester United Player to Watch vs Ipswich Town

Bruno Fernandes fired home his tenth of the season at the weekend and, in Amad's absence, he's one of the very few players in this team seemingly even somewhat capable of creating chances.

Ipswich Town Team News

Kieran McKenna, once an assistant coach at Man United, returns to Old Trafford without Christian Walton, Chiedozie Ogbene, Wes Burns or Julio Enciso, while, Jens Cajuste and Kalvin Phillips are both doubts, after the pair were taken off at the weekend, which would leave them very short of midfield options.

In better news, fit again Leif Davis started at left-back on Saturday, while Sammie Szmodics was an unused substitute, his most-recent league outing come on 5 January due to an ankle injury. Lastly, in goal, Alex Palmer will start a third successive Premier League game, his debut in the top-flight, at the age of 28, came less than a fortnight ago, signed due to Arijanet Muriç continued poor performances.

Ipswich Town predicted lineup vs Manchester United: (4-3-3): Palmer; Godfrey, O'Shea, Greaves, Davis; Taylor, Morsy, Philogene, Hutchinson, Szmodics; Delap.

Ipswich Town Player to Watch vs Manchester United

Omari Hutchinson scored a spectacular equaliser when Man United visited Suffolk in November, also on target against Tottenham at the weekend, so could he be the hero again here?

Manchester United vs Ipswich Town Prediction

We are backing Man United to win this one, but only just, most-likely to do so in extremely unconvincing fashion on Wednesday night: Manchester United 2-1 Ipswich Town.
