Manchester United are targeting a third successive home league win over Chelsea for the first time since 1957, so who will win this blockbuster fixture?

Manchester United vs Chelsea Preview

Will Manchester United continue to enjoy a prospective-new manager bounce? Last weekend's 2-1 defeat at West Ham proved to be the final straw for Erik ten Hag, sacked on Monday morning following 128 matches in charge, delivering two trophies, but with the team currently 14th in the table, equidistant away from both the relegation zone and the Champions League spots.

So, as Ruud van Nistelrooy took interim charge for the first time on Wednesday, the Red Devils appeared revitalised, smashing Leicester 5-2 in the EFL Cup, with Casemiro scoring twice, including an absolute rocket, Bruno Fernandes bagging a brace too while Alejandro Garnacho was also on target. Then, on Friday, it was announced that Rúben Amorim will be Man United's next head coach, taking over on 11 November, with Sporting CP receiving €11 million in compensation.

For now, van Nistelrooy will have three more games at the helm, also welcoming PAOK and then Leicester again to Old Trafford this week. Before then, a clash with Chelsea is always a red-letter date in the diary, so can Man United spark their season into life with victory in Sunday's headliner?

Chelsea meantime are up in fifth, albeit only six points better off than their hosts, following last Sunday's 2-1 home victory over Newcastle, with Nicolas Jackson and, who else, Cole Palmer on target. However, in mid-week, Enzo Maresca made wholesale changes to his side and paid the price, with the Blues dumped out the Carabao Cup by familiar foes Newcastle, beaten 2-0 on Tyneside following two calamitous errors, the second accredited to Axel Disasi as an own goal.

Back in the league, Chelsea's A-team continue to impress but are still searching for that first statement win, having come up short against both Man City and Liverpool so far. Whether beating Man United right now would constitute that is up for debate, but what is not is the fact the Blues have not won at Old Trafford since May 2013, after Sir Alex Ferguson's side had wrapped up the title back then, so can Chelsea change that fact here?

Manchester United Team News

Even if Ruud van Nistelrooy wanted to make sweeping changes, he has limited scope to do so, considering Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Kobbie Mainoo, Christian Eriksen, Antony and Mason Mount are all injured. André Onana will return in goal, after Altay Bayındır made only his third appearance for the club on Wednesday, with Rasmus Højlund displacing Joshua Zirkzee in attack and Noussair Mazraoui returning at full-back likely to be the only outfield alterations.

Manchester United predicted lineup vs Chelsea: (4-2-3-1): Onana; Dalot, de Ligt, Martínez, Mazraoui; Ugarte, Casemiro, Fernandes, Garnacho, Rashford; Højlund.

Manchester United Player to Watch vs Chelsea

Marcus Rashford has scored only four goals this season, but has previously found the net six times against Chelsea, only on target against Leicester and Man City with greater regularity.

Chelsea Team News

Enzo Maresca continued the theme of making sweeping changes in both the Conference League and EFL Cup this week, so will mostly revert to last Sunday's team selection here. Jadon Sancho is ineligible to face his parent club, but is actually injured anyway. Reece James, intriguingly deployed at left-back last weekend, will start a third successive Premier League match for the first time in almost a year, while Roméo Lavia will keep his place at the base of midfield, having superseded Enzo Fernández in the pecking order.

Chelsea predicted lineup vs Manchester United: (4-3-3): Sánchez; Gusto, Fofana, Colwill, James; Caicedo, Lavia, Madueke, Palmer, Neto; Jackson.

Chelsea Player to Watch vs Manchester United

Cole Palmer bagged a hat-trick the last time these two clubs met on target in both the tenth and 11th minutes of injury time as Chelsea prevailed 4-3, so can he add to his seven goals so far this season?

Manchester United vs Chelsea Prediction

Both teams have scored in each of the last six encounters between these two clubs, with the most-recent three producing 15 goals, that's a goal every 18 minutes on average. Thus, neutrals tuning in on Sunday will surely be treated to an entertaining affair, but we are firmly sitting on the fence and predicting it'll be a high-scoring draw: Manchester United 2-2 Chelsea.
