Manchester City gave their Champions League hopes a massive boost with a dramatic 2-1 win over fellow European contenders Aston Villa to fire themselves into third place in the Premier League.
Villa almost took an instant lead after just 18 seconds when a good team move ended in Marcus Rashford hitting the foot of the post. The hosts then struck seven minutes in when Omar Marmoush skipped into the box before squaring for Bernardo Silva, whose effort couldn't be kept out by Emiliano Martinez.
The visitors were soon offered a chance to reprieve themselves when Ruben Dias brought Jacob Ramsey down in the box, prompting Stuart Atwell to point to the penalty spot following a VAR check. Rashford stepped up and coolly slot it into the net to level proceedings.
City fumed at the decision and almost retook the lead instantly when Marmoush pounced on a loose pass by Martinez but couldn't get the better of the Villa 'keeper. Rashford was then denied a second by some good positioning from Ortega.
Following the break, the hosts piled the pressure on Villa and won a series of corners with both Dias and Marmoush having efforts blocked. James McAtee then went close when he latched onto a pass from Kevin De Bruyne before his ambitious lobbed effort from the edge of the box went just wide.
Marmoush had the ball in the net with 10 minutes to go after getting on the end of a good pass by Ilkay Gundogan but had strayed offside in his run. The hosts won it in stoppage time when substitute Jeremy Doku made a good run down the left side before sending a ball across for Matheus Nunes to fire in from a difficult angle.
