Liverpool are unbeaten in 16 meetings with Newcastle, winning six in a row prior to the duo's 3-3 draw in December, while the Magpies are winless in 28 visits to Anfield, dating back three decades.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United Preview

After taking a gigantic step towards the Premier League title this weekend, will Liverpool win again? On Sunday, the run-away league-leaders swatted soon to be dethroned Manchester City aside at the Etihad, cruising to victory, thanks to first half goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai.

With Arsenal having been beaten 24 hours earlier, Arne Slot's side are now 11 points clear at the top, a surely unassailable advantage, now unbeaten in 23 Premier League matches. Of the Reds' 11 remaining fixtures, seven are at Anfield, including each of the next three, looking to wrap up a record-equaling 20th top-flight title in double-quick time. This mid-week clash is of course an EFL Cup Final dress rehearsal, these same two teams will meet at Wembley in just 18 days time, hence why Liverpool will be doubly determined to claim victory.

As for Newcastle United, they were also victorious on Sunday, edging a truly bonkers game against Nottingham Forest at St James' Park that finished 4-3. After going a goal down early, the Magpies then went on a scoring spree, netting four times in 11 first half minutes; Lewis Miley and Jacob Murphy on target, before Alexander Isak bagged a quick-fire double.

So, despite losing three of four league fixtures beforehand, Eddie Howe's team moved back up to fifth, thereby on course for Champions League qualification, but are now preparing to face the ultimate test, seeking to send out a statement, ahead of next month's Wembley date. So, will the Toon Army have a first league win at Anfield since 1994 to celebrate? Probably not, but you never know.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United Head-to-Head Record

  • Matches Played: 188.

Liverpool Team News

For the last two matches, against Villa and Man City, Arne Slot has switched to a strikerless, 4-2-4 formation, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones essentially spearheading the attack. So, it'll be interesting to see if he sticks with this, or if any of Darwin Núñez, Diogo Jota or fit-again Cody Gakpo are restored to the lineup.

At the back, with Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez sidelined, no changes are expected. Having been dumped out of the FA Cup, Slot's team will have a week to prepare for next Wednesday's trip to Paris after this one, so they can go all-out for victory.

Liverpool predicted lineup vs Newcastle United: (4-4-2): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konaté, van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Jones, Szoboszlai; Salah, Luis Díaz.

Liverpool Player to Watch vs Newcastle United

Mohamed Salah has a truly flabbergasting 30 goals and 21 assists to his name this season, with Sunday the 11th different Premier League match in which he'd both scored and assisted this season. The Egyptian has scored ten goals in his last 14 meetings with Newcastle, likely to get another here.

Newcastle United Team News

For Eddie Howe's team, neither Sven Botman nor Joelinton are expected to be fit. Thus, Dan Burn will continue Fabian Schär at the back while, in midfield, Sandro Tonali is expected to return with teenager Lewis Miley, scorer of Sunday's equaliser, back amongst the substitutes.

In goal, Howe has a big decision to make. Martin Dúbravka had started ten successive Premier League matches, before fit-again Nick Pope was restored at the weekend, not covering himself in glory conceding three times, so who will be donning the gloves on Merseyside?

Newcastle United predicted lineup vs Liverpool: (4-3-3): Pope; Livramento, Schär, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Guimarães, Willock; Murphy, Gordon, Isak.

Newcastle United Players to Watch vs Liverpool

Alexander Isak's double against Nottingham Forest took his tally to 21 for the season. The first of the Swede's 56 goals for Newcastle came at Anfield in August 2022, bagging three in five against the Reds, so can Isak fire the Magpies to a famous win?

Liverpool vs Newcastle United Prediction

We cannot see beyond a Liverpool victory on Wednesday night. The Reds' form is simply imperious so, while we expect Newcastle to cause the run-away league-leaders some problems, we're expecting Eddie Howe's team to depart Anfield defeated: Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle United.
