Manchester United have won each of their last four meetings with Ipswich Town, all without conceding, so will it be more of the same in Suffolk, or can the Tractor Boys claim an historic first victory over the Red Devils since 1997?

Ipswich Town vs Manchester United Preview

Rúben Amorim will become Manchester United's 25th manager, not including caretakers, so will this be the start of a successful new-era, or merely more of the same? Amorim arrives to find a team currently 13th in the Premier League, equidistant away from the bottom three and second, albeit in a more stable position following Ruud van Nistelrooy's interim tenure that yielded three wins and a draw in all competitions, most-recently swatting Leicester City aside 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Nevertheless, that was only Man United's fourth victory of the campaign so, make no mistake about it, Amorim has plenty of work to do. His first three matches in charge are this trip to Suffolk, followed by home games against Bodø/Glimt and then Everton, before a mouthwatering trip to Arsenal, so he'll certainly be seeking to build some early momentum ahead of that visit to North London.

Ipswich Town though have, very recently in fact, proved themselves capable of causing an upset, so can they spoil Amorim's welcome party? Two weeks ago, the Tractor Boys claimed their first Premier League victory since 2002, ending an 8,236 day wait, by beating Tottenham in their own back yard no less, with Sammie Szmodics scoring a bicycle kick, before Liam Delap poked home from mere picometres out.

This momentous victory hauled Kieran McKenna's team out of the bottom three and reinforces the belief that Ipswich can beat the drop, with winnable games against Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Wolves to come before Christmas. Days like these though are why clubs work so hard to gain promotion from the Championship, or in Ipswich's case League One as well, so can the Blues claim an historic victory when Man United visit Portman Road in Sunday's headliner slot?

Ipswich Town Team News

Axel Tuanzebe has returned following a thumb injury, so is set to start against the club he joined as a nine year old, before departing for Ipswich 17 years later. Elsewhere, Kalvin Phillips is available to return, following his one-match ban, but Jens Cajuste may have done enough at Spurs to retain his place. With Chiedozie Ogbene injured, it'll be either Jack Clarke or Wes Burns out-wide. Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap were the scorers at Tottenham, with the latter bagging his sixth of the campaign already. Captain Sam Morsy and Omari Hutchinson are both one booking away from suspension.

Ipswich Town predicted lineup vs Manchester United: (4-2-3-1): Muric; Johnson, Tuanzebe, O'Shea, Davis; Morsy, Cajuste, Clarke, Hutchinson, Szmodics; Delap.

Ipswich Town Player to Watch vs Manchester United

The Blues have only scored four goals at Portman Road so far, three of which Liam Delap is responsible for, so he certainly remains their most-likely goal-getter again.

Manchester United Team News

During his 231 matches in charge of Sporting CP, Rúben Amorim unequivocally deployed a 3-4-3 so, assuming he sticks with his favoured formation, how this fits together will be one of the more fascinating aspects of his arrival. At the back, Victor Lindelöf was taken off injured during Sweden's win over Slovakia last weekend, thereby joining Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro in the treatment room, so could Jonny Evans be required? In better news, Tyrell Malacia managed 45 minutes against Huddersfield in the EFL Trophy during the break, his first action since May 2023, although the Dutchman is only likely to be on the bench. Elsewhere, there is optimism that Kobbie Mainoo could be involved, while Mason Mount is fit again too. Lastly, it'll be fascinating to see who forms Amorim's front three, given that this is the only area of the field he actually has options.

Manchester United predicted lineup vs Ipswich Town: (3-4-3): Onana; Evans, de Ligt, Martínez; Dalot, Ugarte, Mainoo, Mazraoui; Fernandes, Garnacho, Højlund.

Manchester United Player to Watch vs Ipswich Town

Bruno Fernandes has been excellent form of late, scoring four in four games under Ruud van Nistelrooy, also on target against Poland at Estádio do Dragão last Friday night, before being given the second game off, as Portugal had nothing to play for. Likely to be deployed in a new, inside-forward position, Fernandes will be key to any success Amorim has as Man United boss.

Ipswich Town vs Manchester United Prediction

We are backing Man United to leave Suffolk with all three points, but only just, with this unlikely to be an easy first game in charge for the new manager: Ipswich Town 1-2 Manchester United.
