Aston Villa are unbeaten in 11 league meetings with Everton, winning eight of them, while the Toffees' most-recent victory over the Villans at Goodison came a decade ago; Roberto Martínez and Rémi Garde the two managers that day.

Everton vs Aston Villa Preview

It's the start of a new era at Everton, well sort of. Last Thursday was an eventful day on Merseyside because, at mid-afternoon, it was announced that Sean Dyche had been sacked, a month after the Friedkin Group completed their takeover. That night, led by club legend and U18 manager Leighton Baines, the Toffees faced Peterborough in the FA Cup, battling through to round four, courtesy of an opener from Beto followed by a late penalty, converted by Iliman Ndiaye.

In the Premier League meanwhile, the reason Dyche was relieved of his duties is because the Blues are winless in five, claiming victory in only one of their last 11, failing to score in a whopping eight of these matches. So, on Saturday morning, it was confirmed that David Moyes had been re-hired as Everton manager, 12 years on from leaving for Manchester United, having been in charge of a huge 518 games during his first spell. In theory, Moyes will be the man to lead Everton into their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock later this year, but first and foremost he must keep them in the division, with the Toffees currently just one point clear of danger, making every point precious.

Aston Villa meanwhile have twice as many points as Everton, currently eighth, thereby occupying the final potential European spot, albeit they have loftier ambitions than that. On Friday night, the Claret and Blue Army had to fight back from a goal down to book their place in the FA Cup fourth round, 1-0 down at home to West Ham, only for Amadou Onana to tap home an equaliser from mere picometres out, before Morgan Rogers struck with the winner soon after. At Villa Park, Unai Emery's team are unbeaten in ten in the league, but their away record is less than impressive, losing five successive Premier League matches on the road, their longest such streak since being relegated in 2015/16. So, could the Villans be ripe for an upset as Moyes returns to Goodison?

Everton vs Aston Villa Head-to-Head Record

Everton Team News

Leighton Baines confirmed he deployed the lineup Sean Dyche had picked against Peterborough, featuring 17-year-old Harrison Armstrong, so it'll be interesting to see what David Moyes changes. Séamus Coleman, who was part of Thursday's coaching setup, James Garner and Dwight McNeil all remain sidelined, as is Tim Iroegbunam, meaning he'll be denied a reunion with his former club. In recent weeks, Armando Broja had been getting the nod in attack, but will a change of management signal a return to the side for Dominic Calvert-Lewin?

Everton predicted lineup vs Aston Villa: (4-5-1): Pickford; Young, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Gana Gueye, Mangala, Doucouré, Harrison, Ndiaye; Calvert-Lewin.

Everton Player to Watch vs Aston Villa

Abdoulaye Doucouré was a key figure under Dyche, so this will be his first opportunity to impress to news boss.

Aston Villa Team News

Defenders Pau Torres and Diego Carlos are sidelined, while midfield duo John McGinn and Ross Barkley are both major doubts, the latter having hobbled off after around 20 minutes on Friday. In goal, Emi Martínez wasn't even on the bench for the FA Cup tie, but will be donning the gloves for this one, while Lucas Digne and Amadou Onana will also return. Meantime, Unai Emery has a tough decision to make in attack; Jhon Durán's three-match ban is now over, he has not featured since Boxing Day, so will the Colombian be straight back in, with Ollie Watkins thereby dropping out? Lastly, defender Óscar Mingueza has arrived from Celta Vigo, but is unlikely to make his debut just yet.

Aston Villa predicted lineup vs Everton: (4-2-3-1): Martínez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne; Kamara, Onana, Tielemans, Bailey, Rogers; Durán.

Aston Villa Player to Watch vs Everton

As alluded to, Jhon Durán is available for the first time since being sent off on Tyneside, so can he add to his 12 goals so far this season, one of which was a rocket when Everton visited Villa Park in August?

Everton vs Aston Villa Prediction

We are backing Aston Villa for victory at Goodison. The visitors, undoubtably, boast more quality than their hosts, so it won't be a happy home coming for Moyes on Wednesday: Everton 0-2 Aston Villa.
