Prior to this season, Aston Villa's most-recent European Cup tie came all the way back in 1983, when the holders were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Juventus, with Michel Platini the scorer of a brace. Fair to say, a lot has changed in the subsequent four decades.

Aston Villa vs Juventus Preview

Having already beaten one European juggernaut at Villa Park this season, can Aston Villa do it again? Back in October, in their first Champions League home game since the early-80s, Jhon Durán's stunning late strike saw the Claret and Blue Army defeat Bayern Munich in Birmingham. In all, Unai Emery's team actually began the league phase with three straight victories, not conceding during any of those wins. However, recent results have certainly dampened enthusiasm, with the Villans requiring a late Ross Barkley equaliser to salvage a draw with struggling Crystal Palace on Saturday.

This means Villa are winless in four league games, claiming victory from only one of the last seven, while their perfect record in this competition also came to an end three weeks ago, defeated 1-0 by Club Brugge at Jan Breydelstadion; Tyrone Mings penalised for one of the most bizarre handballs you're ever likely to see. Nevertheless, Villa do remain eighth in the Champions League table, and a statement victory here would reaffirm their ambitions of going straight through to the round of 16.

Juventus meantime would leapfrog their hosts with victory, following a mixed Champions League campaign to date. La Vecchia Signora smashed PSV on matchday one before, a fortnight later, fighting back from behind to beat RB Leipzig 3-2, with Francisco Conceição snatching victory in Saxony against the odds, given that goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio had been sent off. Since then however, I Bianconeri have failed to win either of their two outings in this competition, suffering a shock defeat when Stuttgart visited Turin, before Dušan Vlahović's second half spot-kick secured a draw with Lille in Northern France.

Meantime, in Serie A, Thiago Motta's team are still unbeaten, albeit draws are holding them back; Saturday's goalless stalemate at San Siro against AC Milan means they're actually down in sixth, albeit it's extremely tight. Juve fixtures are rarely thrilling, that was actually their fourth 0-0 of the season already, but will la Fidanzata d'Italia leave Villa Park with three precious points?

Aston Villa Team News

Ezri Konsa, Amadou Onana, Boubacar Kamara and Jacob Ramsey are all sidelined, but fit again Matty Cash is expected to start, having replaced Lamare Bogarde at half time against Crystal Palace. On the other side, Ian Maatsen was given a rare opportunity at the weekend, but Lucas Digne is firmly the first-choice left-back. Jhon Durán would sit out next month's trip to Leipzig if booked.

Aston Villa predicted lineup vs Juventus: (4-2-2-2): Martínez; Cash, Diego Carlos, Torres, Digne; Barkley, Tielemans, McGinn, Bailey; Rogers, Watkins.

Aston Villa Player to Watch vs Juventus

Ollie Watkins' goal on Saturday was his sixth of the season so far, now seeking to net in the Champions League for the very first time.

Juventus Team News

Thiago Motta is without star centre-back Bremer as well as Douglas Luiz , who will miss out on a meeting with his former employers due to injury. In attack too, Juve are very short of options, given that Dušan Vlahović, Nico González, Vasilije Adžić and Arkadiusz Milik are all sidelined, hence why Motta deployed a strikerless formation at San Siro on Saturday; suffice to say, it didn't yield much forward thrust. Captain Danilo is one yellow card away from a ban, likely to be ultra-careful considering his former club Man City are their next Champions League opponents.

Juventus predicted lineup vs Aston Villa: (4-2-2-2): Di Gregorio; Danilo Gatti, Kalulu, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Thuram, McKennie, Koopmeiners; Conceição, Yıldız.

Juventus Player to Watch vs Aston Villa

With all their usual striker options sidelined, Kenan Yıldız could be Juventus' primary attacking threat, seeking to add to his four goals this season, one of which came against PSV on matchday one.

Aston Villa vs Juventus Prediction

Despite their recent poor form, we are backing Aston Villa to claim victory. The Claret and Blue Army have won each of their last three home games against Italian opposition, all without conceding, including defeating Bologna 2-0 in October. Given Juve's attacking injury crisis, we can't see them threatening Emi Martínez's goal too much, hence why we're forecasting that trend to continue: Aston Villa 2-0 Juventus.
