Manchester United’s Andre Onana defends Alejandro Garnacho in FA investigation
By Evan Curnew
Manchester United did not kick off their season the way most might have anticipated, but they are slowly getting back on track. After initially falling into the bottom half of the Premier League table to begin the campaign, the club is now hoping to build off of recent momentum.
They have now won three games in a row, including picking up their first Champions League points in the season against FC Copenhagen on October 24th. The game at Old Trafford included goalkeeper Andre Onana stopping a penalty that ultimately helped the Red Devils earn all three points.
Post-game, forward Alejandro Garnacho had posted on X (twitter), a photo of both Onana and himself during the match. The caption used two gorilla emojis, and after some initial backlash on the post, it was deleted. The Athletic is now reporting that the Football Association has been in contact with Alejandro Garnacho to ask about the post. It is believed that Alejandro Garnacho is at risk of serving a fine for the social media post.
Andre Onana was quick to defend his teammate and has made it clear that there is nothing in the situation to be talked about.
Premier League players have been subject to fines in the past in regards to social media posts deemed as offensive. It is unknown whether or not the Football Association is willing to take things further at the moment, especially after Andre Onana has come out and said the matter should go no further.
Manchester United’s next match is the highly anticipated Manchester Derby, where the club will host Manchester City on Saturday, October 29th. Last season, the clubs split the two Premier League games, each picking up a win. Manchester City beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final back in June as well.
