Strengthening the defense

One of the key reasons for the Spurs’ downfall last season was their poor defensive display. The team netted 70 goals but allowed 63 in the 2023 season. Spurs quickly identified the issue and invested heavily in their defense.

Making a massive adjustment in the post, the team used 26-year-old Guglielmo Vicario from the preseason. The Italy international is an excellent shot-stopper who kicks off attacks with his progressive passing. Considering his age, he still has plenty of room for improvement and is showing positive signs in the games.

In the backline, World Cup winner Romero was heavily criticized for his club performances. But a change in the season calendar changed his game completely. With 3 new faces in the back line, the Spurs fielded Porro, Romero, Van Der Ven and Udogie for most of the season. Although they seemed shaky on some occasions, they have recovered from their mistakes quickly in the game. Nonetheless, Van Der Van has also scored all important and sole goal in the last fixture against the stubborn Luton town defense. With just 8 competitive games together, the coach would be happy with his back-4 performances.
