In the January transfer window, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag may bid on the answer to his current defensive woes.

Manchester United are already looking ahead to the January transfer window as Erik ten Hag plans an overhaul of his squad to fix a multitude of problems. Perhaps at the forefront of the Dutch manager’s mind, though, is to sign a new defender. Certainly, this is the area which is depleted the most within the squad.

There is depth, for sure, but the depth isn’t good enough. If there are injuries or suspensions, Man United will need to rely on Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire. For a team that considers themselves title contenders, this is nothing short of embarrassing.

Thankfully for fans, though, Erik ten Hag isn’t happy with this. While Gareth Southgate may protect Harry Maguire at all costs, Ten Hag recognises it may be best for the team to upgrade him.

Manchester United could bid for Marc Guehi in January

According to a report by Goal, Manchester United could bid for Marc Guehi in the January transfer window. With Harry Maguire essentially saying to United he must get game time or he will leave, I assume that Guehi is seen as the ideal replacement for the England international.

In Guehi, Erik ten Hag would obtain a dynamic defender who is capable of playing at the highest level. Not only would he be a worthwhile replacement for Maguire, but he’d actually be a significant upgrade.

Now quite the regular in the England setup, his colossal defensive approach, matched with his composure while he is on the ball, makes him the ideal defender for United’s set-up. Ten Hag needs to sign ball-playing centre halves to optimise the passing ability of Andre Onana.

Do you think Manchester United will sign Marc Guehi in the January transfer window?
