Kalvin Phillips’ time at Manchester City has been nothing short of a mystery as to why the club signed in the first place. First-choice defensive midfielder Rodri, is arguably the best in the world in his position and has made Phillips a bench option at best for Pep Guardiola. Phillips has started just a single match for Manchester City this season, a 1-0 loss against Newcastle in the EFL Cup. The English international started two matches in the Premier League last season with City as he dealt with injuries and a lack of fitness.

Despite the former Leeds midfielder not having much action at the club level, he is still being called up by Gareth Southgate for international duty with England. He plays regularly with the Three Lions, starting against Scotland and Italy in the last two international windows. Fans of the England national team are starting to get annoyed with Southgate’s “favourites” and would like to see players such as West Ham’s James Ward-Prowse be more regular call-ups.

Playing for England may not be something always on the cards for Phillips if he struggles again this season to play meaningful games under Pep Guardiola. It now looks as though the player also realizes this situation as he spoke to BBC Sport.

"“I know that I need to be playing games and competing every weekend. I’m going to have to make a decision on my City future over the next month. Hopefully my chance comes but if it doesn’t then I will have to make other decisions”."

Kalvin Phillips showed during his time at Leeds in the Premier League that he can be a top midfielder, and it’s likely plenty of teams would be calling City should he make himself available for transfer, assuming his City future looks even more murky.
